Rajnath Singh: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh revealed that Nehru proposed using government funds to rebuild Babri Masjid, but Sardar Patel opposed it, sparking reactions from Congress and renewed debate on governance and secularism.

Nehru’s Proposal to Fund Babri Masjid

Singh revealed that Nehru wanted to use government funds to rebuild the Babri Masjid, but Sardar Patel opposed it, insisting public money should not fund religious projects, setting a precedent for secular governance.

The Somnath Temple Case Was Different

Rajnath Singh also clarified that the government did not fund the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple. Instead, it was rebuilt entirely through donations from the public, amounting to Rs. 30 lakh at that time, and managed via a trust. This clarification highlights the distinction between the two cases. While citizens funded the Somnath Temple, Patel blocked Nehru’s proposal to fund the Babri Masjid with government money.

Ram Mandir in Ayodhya Funded by People

Singh also made it clear that the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya has not been funded by government money. The construction costs have been borne entirely by donations from citizens across the country. This ensures transparency and public participation, showing that religious and cultural projects can be completed with community support rather than state funds.

Congress Reacts

The Congress Party responded to Singh’s statements by defending Nehru’s intentions, stating that his actions were guided by the secular principles of the time. Political analysts note that this revelation has reignited debates about historical governance decisions, the use of public funds for religious purposes, and the secular ethos followed by India’s early leaders.

Significance of Rajnath Singh’s Statement

The statement highlights Sardar Patel’s role in upholding secular governance by preventing government funding for religious projects and shows the importance of public contributions in major cultural projects like Somnath Temple and Ram Mandir.
