Republic Day 2023: On the 74th Republic Day, a significant number of police officers from various state forces and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) were honoured for their exceptional service and bravery. The Union Home Ministry announced that a total of 901 officers were awarded various medals, including 140 medals for gallant action.

These awards were bestowed for a variety of reasons, with eighty being given for operations in areas affected by Left Wing Extremism or Naxal violence. Additionally, 45 officers who were deployed in the Jammu and Kashmir region were also recognized for their courageous actions.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the largest paramilitary organisation in the nation, received the highest number of PMGs—48—followed by 31 from the Maharashtra Police, 25 from the J-K Police, nine from the Jharkhand Police, and seven from each of the Delhi Police, Chhattisgarh Police, and Border Security Force (BSF), according to the report.
None of the police forces have received the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG), the highest honour for bravery.
PPM and other awards given as well
The 93 President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPM) and the 668 Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PM) are further awards. According to the announcement, the PMG is given for remarkable bravery in saving lives and property, deterring crime, or apprehending offenders.
