“Strongly condemn anti-Marathi stand,” declares Maharashtra Govt Resolution

Maharashtra-Karnataka Border Row: In the midst of the ongoing boundary dispute between the two states, the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution to “legally pursue” the inclusion of 865 Marathi-speaking villages in Karnataka. According to the resolution proposed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the Karnataka state legislature passed a resolution on the subject with the explicit intent of escalating the border dispute.

Maharashtra Assembly’s resolution

“The state administration firmly supports the 865 villages’ Marathi-speaking residents. The state government would legally pursue the lawsuit to include every square inch of land from the 865 Marathi-speaking villages in Karnataka before the Supreme Court “proclaimed the Maharashtra Assembly’s resolution.

The Karnataka Legislative Assembly unanimously approved a resolution on the border dispute with Maharashtra on Thursday, pledging to defend the interests of the southern state and refuse to give any territory to its neighbour.

The boundary dispute, which Maharashtra had “manufactured,” had also been denounced in the resolution. The border problem first emerged in 1957 following the reorganisation of governments along linguistic lines.

About the dispute

Belagavi, which was a part of the former Bombay Presidency, was claimed by Maharashtra since it contains a sizable Marathi-speaking population. More than 800 Marathi-speaking villages that are today a part of Karnataka were also claimed by it.

Karnataka claims that the linguistic divisions made in accordance with the 1967 Mahajan Commission Report and the States Reorganisation Act are conclusive.
