The Supreme Court of India has called for responses from the governments of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, as well as the central government, the Election Commission (EC), and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). The PIL alleges the distribution of cash and other freebies ahead of the state assembly elections scheduled later this year. The bench, consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, issued the notices and requested responses from the concerned parties within four weeks.

The PIL seeks to address the alleged distribution of cash

The petitioner’s lawyer argued that the distribution of cash before elections, allegedly using taxpayers’ money, is a grave matter, and such practices place a burden on taxpayers. The PIL seeks to address the alleged distribution of cash and freebies that could potentially influence voters ahead of the upcoming state elections.
