Supreme Court unhappy with status report in Lakhimpur case

The apex court on Monday expressed “unhappiness” over the status report filed by the Yogi Adityanath-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh in connection with the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri that claimed the lives of eight people, including four farmers and three workers of the saffron party.

Questioning the Yogi government, the supreme court said that the status report contains “nothing apart from saying that more witnesses have been examined”.

Further, unhappy over mixing of witnesses in different FIRs in the case, the apex court said it will appoint a former judge of a high court from outside UP to monitor the investigation. The matter will be heard next on Friday.

“To ensure there is no mix up of evidence in the case, we are inclined to appoint a former judge of a different high court to monitor the probe in the case,” the court said and suggested the names of Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain (retired) or justice Ranjit Singh (retired) from Punjab and Haryana High Court to oversee the ongoing investigation.

The hearing in this matter will continue on Friday.
