Tamil Nadu: Fisherman captures tornado over sea at Rameswaram, experts clarify

In one of the rare instances, Fishermen in Tamil Nadu spotted tornadoes appearing over the sea near Mandapam at Gulf Mannar in Rameswaram. A photo that one of the fishermen captured is now doing rounds on the internet. In the picture, the twister appearing steadily over the sea is clearly visible.

Later, officials Officials from Ramanathapuram Fisheries Department clarified that the phenomenon is known as tornado waterspouts, which are rotating columns of air over water. While a tornado appears on land, a waterspout occurs over water. While both tornadoes and waterspouts have a rapid rotation of air and are both classified as tornadoes. However, waterspout tends to be weaker.

Meanwhile, on the covid front, Tamil Nadu reported 1,641 fresh COVID-19 cases and 19 deaths on Tuesday, as per the health bulletin released by the state government on Wednesday. The southern state of India has logged a total of 26,48,668 cases to date with 16,993 active cases. With 1,619 fresh recoveries, the cumulative number of recoveries in Tamil Nadu has gone up to 25,96,316 while the death toll mounted to 35,379.
