India – Canada Relations: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his hope for a reduction in tensions in the diplomatic dispute between India and Canada during a conversation with his Canadian counterpart, Justin Trudeau.

Prime Ministers talk on India Canada Relations

The UK PM discussed the issue concerning Canadian diplomats in India and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to respecting the rule of law, following Canada’s accusation of Indian involvement in the killing of the Khalistan-wanted terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, and both leaders agreed to maintain communication, as stated by Downing Street.

The statement read, “Prime Minister Trudeau updated on the situation relating to Canadian diplomats in India.” Continuing further, “The Prime Minister [Sunak] reaffirmed the UK’s position that all countries should respect sovereignty and the rule of law, including the principles of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. He hoped to see a de-escalation in the situation and agreed to remain in contact with Prime Minister Trudeau on the next steps.”

This follows Justin Trudeau’s statement to the Canadian parliament last month, where he indicated that Canada’s security forces were actively investigating credible claims linking Indian government agents to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June. India has vehemently denied these allegations, dismissing them as “absurd and politically motivated.”
