Viral Video: Ayodhya’s Railway Station Struggles to Match PM Modi’s Swatch Bharat Dream, Watch

Examine the relationship between the cleanliness of the Ayodhya railway station and Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Viral Video: Launched in 2014, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a massive national cleanliness drive headed by Narendra Modi with the goal of revolutionising sanitation and hygiene conditions in India. The project, which aims to eliminate open defecation and create a clean India by October 2, 2019, has caused a paradigm shift in how people view cleanliness in the country.

The Sorry State of Ayodhya Dham Railway Station

In Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, the recently opened Ayodhya Dham railway station is characterised by litter on the ground, walls covered in spittle stains, overfilled garbage cans, and an overall sense of disrepair. Two days ago, a number of videos demonstrating the appalling state of the train station went viral, leading the Railways to punish the station’s sanitation contractor Rs 50,000 on Friday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the Ayodhya Dham Junction railway station on December 30, 2023, and an X account with the username “reality5473” offered his followers a tour of it. Since its opening a little more than two months ago, the once spiffy rail station has assumed a dull aspect.

Amplifying Awareness of Ayodhya Dham’s Conditiona

The videos gained traction on the social media platform since numerous X accounts with a wider audience reposted them. A similar repost has received around 3 million views, and another one reached Northern Railway Lucknow Division, which resulted in a fine for the sanitation contractor of the station.

“Today, a fine of INR 50,000 has been imposed on the sanitation contractor at Ayodhya Dham station for reported irregularities. Additionally, here are some images of the clean station taken at 18:00 hrs,” the official X handle of DRM Lucknow NR shared Friday.
