Fresh claims from the United States suggest that Narendra Modi assured Donald Trump that India would stop purchasing Russian crude oil. According to statements made by Trump in late 2025 and early 2026, the assurance came during trade discussions that reportedly led to a sharp reduction in US tariffs on Indian goods, from 50% to 18%.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reinforced the narrative, describing it as a strategic win that could limit Russia’s oil revenue amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War. Since 2022, India has significantly increased imports of discounted Russian oil, becoming one of Moscow’s largest buyers. Any reversal would mark a major geopolitical development.
Moscow Pushes Back, Says No Policy Change Is Visible
Russia has strongly rejected the US claims. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow sees “no reason to believe” India has altered its energy stance. She emphasised that the oil trade between India and Russia benefits both countries and helps stabilise global markets.
Zakharova also criticised what she described as pressure tactics involving tariffs and sanctions. The Kremlin’s message was clear: from Russia’s perspective, there is no confirmed shift in India’s crude import policy.
India Maintains Silence While Prioritising Energy Security
New Delhi has neither confirmed nor denied the alleged assurance. In the past, India has consistently stated that its energy decisions are driven by national interest and economic stability. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has spoken about diversifying energy sources, but no direct statement from PM Modi about halting Russian oil imports has been made public.
For now, India appears to be walking a careful diplomatic line — balancing ties with Washington and Moscow while ensuring affordable energy for its economy.
