Donald Trump: President Trump has declared a sweeping new economic offensive against Iran, escalating pressure on Tehran as diplomatic talks remain stalled and a ceasefire arrangement has lapsed.
What Trump Announced
In a Truth Social post, Trump said the US would launch “the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country,” framing it as “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.” He warned that any nation whose financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities offer Iran a “lifeline” would face “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences,” specifically targeting oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, and ship registries linked to Tehran. He called the effort an “ECONOMIC D-DAY” and urged allies to join Washington in isolating Iran.

Context Behind the Escalation
The announcement follows the expiry of a 60-day ceasefire arrangement and comes a day after the UAE, one of Iran‘s key commercial partners, suspended trade and financial dealings with Tehran over alleged Iranian missile fire. Iran’s foreign minister has accused Washington of escalating sanctions after earlier rounds failed to force concessions, calling it an obstacle to any negotiated settlement.
The 25% Tariff Angle
Trump’s latest salvo revives an earlier threat from January 2026, when he ordered an immediate 25 percent tariff on any country doing business with Iran, naming China, Turkey, Iraq, and the UAE among Tehran’s major partners at the time.
Can It Impact India?
Donald Trump: India has historically counted Iran among its oil suppliers, though its Iranian crude imports have fallen sharply in recent years under prior sanctions regimes, with Russia now dominating India’s import basket instead.
