When Did India Start Celebrating National Youth Day?

India officially began celebrating National Youth Day in 1984 to honor Swami Vivekananda’s immense knowledge and legacy. The first Rashtriya Yuva Diwas was observed in 1985, recognising Vivekananda’s unparalleled contribution to Indian philosophy and youth empowerment.

Swami Vivekananda, known for introducing Indian philosophies like Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world, gained international fame with his iconic speech at the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. His emphasis on self-realisation, unity among religions, and service to humanity inspired not just India but the entire world.

His teachings continue to motivate millions, reinforcing the importance of self-confidence, spirituality, and social service among youth.

PM Modi’s Tribute to Swami Vivekananda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to Swami Vivekananda on his birth anniversary, highlighting his lasting influence on India's youth. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi described Swami Vivekananda as an enduring source of inspiration, igniting passion and purpose in young minds.

The Prime Minister also shared a video showcasing Swami Vivekananda’s teachings and their relevance to empowering youth. He emphasised that the day is not just about celebrating the youth but also about honoring a leader who redefined India’s spirit during British colonial rule.

PM Modi reiterated two key messages from Swami Vivekananda for India’s youth:

Institution Building: Strengthening organisations to foster growth.

Innovation: Expanding individual achievements into collective success for a developed nation, or "Viksit Bharat."

PM Modi’s Celebration Plans for Rashtriya Yuva Diwas
