A shocking case out of Nagpur has set off fresh alarm bells over targeted religious coercion after a viral video circulating on social media triggered a police investigation into allegations of rape, sustained blackmail, financial extortion, and forced participation in conversion rituals.

How the Alleged Trap Was Laid

According to India Today, the complaint was filed by a 24-year-old woman whose husband serves in the Indian Air Force and is currently posted outside Nagpur. She says she first crossed paths with one of the accused while looking for a plot of land.

In February 2025, the prime accused, former classmate Ayyaz Taj Madare, contacted her under the pretext of buying a plot. The woman alleges that Ayyaz exploited her trust to lure her to a hotel on Wardha Road. She alleges she was raped while unconscious and that the incident was filmed.

Blackmail, Extortion and Ongoing Coercion

Police allege that Ayyaz extorted Rs 3.09 lakh from the woman by threatening to circulate the videos and photographs if she refused to comply with his demands.

The FIR further claims the harassment did not end after the first incident. Her husband alleged that on May 31, she was taken to meet the second accused, Amin Shaikh, along with a cleric. According to the complaint, conversion-related rituals were carried out during this meeting, and a nikah ceremony was allegedly performed. A viral video showing the accused reciting the Kalma alongside the woman has since spread widely, intensifying public outrage.

Arrests Made, Hunt On For Absconding Cleric

Police arrested Ayyaz Taj Madare (26) and Amin Shaikh (30). Both accused were produced in court and remanded to five days of police custody. Special police teams are conducting raids at suspected locations to trace the absconding third accused, Hazrat Maulana, a resident of Tamia in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab State Media In-Charge Baltej Pannu on Monday said that after losing the trust of the people and facing repeated electoral defeats, the Badal family and Shiromani Akali Dal have dragged revered Sikh institutions into their political battle in a desperate bid to regain relevance. He asserted that the so-called forensic report being used to target CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has failed to establish even the identity of the person seen in the video, exposing what he described as another failed attempt by Sukhbir Singh Badal and Bikram Singh Majithia to defame the Chief Minister.

Baltej Pannu said the same Badal family under whose rule Punjab witnessed beadbi incidents, Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan tragedies is now trying to claim moral authority, while remaining unable to digest the fact that the Bhagwant Mann Government has enacted Punjab’s toughest law against beadbi and delivered transformative governance through initiatives ranging from increased canal water reach and daytime power for farmers to ₹10 lakh health insurance for families.

Addressing a press conference, AAP Punjab State Media In-charge Baltej Pannu said Sri Akal Takht Sahib is the supreme and most revered institution of Sikhs across the world and cannot be treated as the personal estate of Sukhbir Singh Badal or the Shiromani Akali Dal. “Sri Akal Takht Sahib belongs to the entire Panth across the world, not to Sukhbir Singh Badal or the Shiromani Akali Dal. The Jathedar Sahib was appointed in the middle of the night at the behest of Sukhbir Badal without consulting Sikh sects or organisations, and at a place where there was not even Parkash of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.”

Baltej Pannu asserted, “Under such circumstances, his loyalty towards the Badal family and the statement of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Harjinder Singh Dhami describing himself as a soldier of Sukhbir Badal are proof of the politicisation of these revered Sikh institutions.”

Questioning the forensic report released in connection with the controversial video, Baltej Pannu said, “The report nowhere states who the person visible in the video actually is. Even if we accept the claim that the video was not generated through AI, the Jathedar must explain what the height of the individual seen in the video is. Does the height of CM Bhagwant Singh Mann match the height of the person visible in the footage? Which hotel room is it where photographs of Guru Sahib are displayed, as is being claimed? The report has completely failed to establish who is actually visible in the video.”

Baltej Pannu added, “In the coming days, the Aam Aadmi Party will place the complete truth before the people and expose every aspect of this controversy.”

Recalling incidents of beadbi and subsequent developments during the Akali Dal government, Baltej Pannu said the history of the Shiromani Akali Dal contains several dark chapters that continue to haunt Punjab. “In 2015, the sacred bir of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was stolen from Burj Jawahar Singh Wala. Sikhs were challenged through offensive posters and later the holy parts of Guru Sahib were found scattered in garbage heaps. At that time, Sukhbir Singh Badal and his associates, who repeatedly came to power wearing the mask of Panthic politics, remained asleep,” said Baltej Pannu.

He further stated, “The Justice Zora Singh Commission report was suppressed. Attempts were made to bury the issue by offering police jobs to witnesses. Copies of the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission report were sold outside the Punjab Assembly at scrap value. Every possible effort was made to destroy evidence related to the Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan firing incidents. As a result, people such as Sukhbir Singh Badal, Sumedh Saini and Umranangal are today roaming free on bail granted by the courts. They fear that the investigation into Behbal Kalan will soon become a noose around their necks.”

Baltej Pannu said that after the people of Punjab gave a massive mandate to the Aam Aadmi Party in 2022 and formed the government under CM Bhagwant Singh Mann, traditional political parties struggled to come to terms with the changing political landscape. “Their initial propaganda was that this government would not survive three months or even a year. When the government started delivering results and CM Bhagwant Singh Mann went to the hospital for a health check-up, their frustration reached such a level that Bikram Singh Majithia resorted to low-level politics by displaying a video of the Chief Minister’s daughter during a press conference. However, the people of Punjab were not influenced by such tactics,” he said.

Highlighting the achievements of the Bhagwant Mann Government, Baltej Pannu said nearly four-and-a-half years into office, the government continues to enjoy the confidence of the people. “Under the leadership of CM Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Aam Aadmi Party has registered historic victories in the Jalandhar Lok Sabha by-election, the by-elections in Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak and Tarn Taran, as well as municipal corporation, municipal council and thousands of sarpanch elections. These victories were not achieved through force or police power but through development and by ending the era of gangsterism and intimidation that prevailed until 2017,” said Baltej Pannu.

He added, “The Bhagwant Mann Government increased canal water reach from 21 per cent to 80 per cent, ensured daytime electricity for farmers, provided 600 units of free electricity to households, deployed the Sadak Surakhiya Force on roads and introduced health insurance cards offering cashless treatment worth ₹10 lakh to the people.”

Baltej Pannu said the biggest challenge for the Shiromani Akali Dal is that the same CM Bhagwant Singh Mann whom they repeatedly attempted to defame has enacted strict legislation to protect the sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. “CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has introduced historic amendments to the Satkar Act and implemented a strict law to prevent beadbi of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Now, anyone committing beadbi will have to face punishment. The Act has been passed and, after receiving the Governor’s assent, has come into force,” he said.

Baltej Pannu further stated, “The Badal family, which considered itself the sole custodian of Panthic interests and which pushed an entire generation of Punjab into the quagmire of chitta between 2007 and 2017, is unable to digest this strict law enacted on the sacred land of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. In its frustration, it has now played its last political card and, unfortunately, has fielded the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib as a pawn in its political battle. However, the intelligent and aware people of Punjab will never allow such designs to succeed.”

Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Punjab Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Monday said the arrest of a BJP functionary with drugs has exposed the party’s deep links with the narcotics trade, raising serious questions about its role in the drug menace that has plagued Punjab for years. He asserted that while drug smugglers earlier operated under BJP’s political protection, BJP leaders and office-bearers themselves are now being caught in drug-related cases.

The senior AAP leader said the BJP must explain why repeated recoveries of massive quantities of drugs are being made through Gujarat, while recalling that it was during the SAD-BJP regime that chitta spread across Punjab and pushed the state into darkness. He emphasised that under CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s Yudh Nashean Virudh campaign, hundreds of major drug smugglers have been jailed, their properties demolished, and that no person involved in the drug trade, whether a BJP leader, office-bearer or supporter, will be spared.

Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated, “This arrest has completely exposed the BJP’s double standards and its deep links with the drug trade. For years, the BJP has been trying to politicise the issue of drugs in Punjab, but now one of its own office-bearers has been caught in a drug case, proving that the party itself is neck-deep in the menace it pretends to fight.”

He asserted, “Earlier, drug traffickers operated under their political protection; now BJP leaders themselves are being caught with drugs. This incident has exposed the real face of the BJP before the people of Punjab.”

The Minister said, “Since March 2022, under the leadership of CM Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government has been actively running the uncompromising ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ campaign. Hundreds of major drug smugglers have been arrested and sent behind bars, their properties have been demolished, and strict action has been taken against every individual involved in the drug trade, regardless of political affiliation.”

Recalling the previous regime, he continued, “Punjab witnessed its worst drug crisis during the SAD-BJP government. It was during the Akali Dal-BJP government that ‘chitta’ spread across Punjab and the state suffered immense damage. Today, the same parties that pushed Punjab into darkness are trying to mislead the public and escape accountability.”

The Minister further said, “While the Bhagwant Singh Mann Government is working tirelessly to eliminate drugs from Punjab, the BJP’s role in the national drug network cannot be ignored. A major portion of drugs entering India passes through BJP-ruled Gujarat before reaching different parts of the country.”

Questioning the BJP, he stated, “The BJP should answer why massive quantities of drugs are repeatedly recovered from Gujarat. Instead of targeting Punjab, the BJP must explain how narcotics are entering the country on such a large scale under its watch.”

Highlighting ongoing measures against the drug menace, he said, “The Punjab Government has strengthened border security through anti-drone systems, intensified action against smugglers, and expanded de-addiction and rehabilitation facilities to help young people trapped in addiction return to normal life. The AAP Government follows a zero-tolerance policy against drugs. No one, irrespective of political position or influence, will be spared if found involved in drug trafficking.”

The minister added that if any BJP leader, office-bearer or supporter is found involved in the drug trade, Punjab Police will take strict action and send them to jail. The law is equal for everyone under the Bhagwant Singh Mann Government.

Concluding, Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said, “The people of Punjab are fully aware of which parties damaged the state in the past and who is genuinely working to save Punjab’s future. The BJP and Akali Dal have repeatedly betrayed Punjab. The AAP Government is committed to making Punjab drug-free, and this campaign will continue with full force until every drug smuggler is brought to justice.”

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday felicitated candidates who cleared the prestigious UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Examination 2025 and said their success reflects the growing strength of Punjab’s education system and the immense potential of the state’s youth. Interacting with the future officers, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said it is heartening to see young men and women from ordinary families securing some of the country’s most coveted positions through sheer hard work, talent and determination.

Highlighting the outstanding performance of girls in competitive examinations, he said their achievements are a powerful symbol of women empowerment and proof that equal opportunities enable daughters to excel in every field. Reaffirming the Punjab Government’s commitment to educational reforms, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said the government is continuously working to ensure quality education and equal opportunities for every child, with the dream of seeing more youngsters from Punjab rise to high and prestigious positions in public service and beyond.

Sharing a few snippets from this pleasant meeting, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated: “Today, I had the privilege of specially felicitating the bright candidates who have brought pride to Punjab by clearing the prestigious UPSC 2025 examination. I had a very meaningful and constructive interaction with these young achievers. Their hard work, dedication and perseverance serve as a great source of inspiration for other youth as well. I am fully confident that they will serve the nation and Punjab with honesty, commitment and sincerity in the years to come. It is our dream to see more young people occupying high and prestigious positions, and AAP government is continuously working towards turning this dream into reality.”

Interacting with the newly selected IAS officers from Punjab who cleared the UPSC Examination 2025, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “Punjab’s youth are making the state proud through their remarkable achievements. These officers have cracked the prestigious UPSC examination and brought glory not only to Punjab but also to their parents. Their success reflects the immense potential of our students and the positive changes taking place in the education sector.”

The Chief Minister said that this is neither the first such achievement nor will it be the last, expressing confidence that these officers will continue to achieve new milestones and bring laurels to Punjab in the years to come. “The children of ordinary families are proving that with dedication, perseverance and proper guidance, no goal is beyond reach. Their success is a matter of immense pride and satisfaction for the entire state. These sons and daughters of the soil have proved their mettle and demonstrated that talent exists in every household,” he stated.

Highlighting the exceptional performance of girl students, the Chief Minister said that daughters are excelling in every sphere of education and competitive examinations and are rapidly emerging as role models for society. “Girls have consistently outperformed in every field in Punjab and are proving their capabilities whenever they are given an opportunity. These daughters are demonstrating extraordinary talent and determination. Their achievements send a powerful message that with equal opportunities and encouragement, girls can accomplish anything they set their minds to,” said CM Bhagwant Singh Mann.

Calling the success of girl students a matter of pride and satisfaction for the entire state, the Chief Minister described it as a clear symbol of women empowerment. Reiterating the Punjab Government’s commitment to strengthening the education system, he said that quality education remains one of the top priorities of the government. “We are continuously working to improve government schools by providing better infrastructure, modern teaching methodologies and a conducive learning environment for students. Every child deserves access to quality education irrespective of economic background, and our government is firmly committed to ensuring that opportunity reaches every household,” asserted CM Bhagwant Singh Mann.

The Chief Minister said that the Punjab Government is making concerted efforts to further strengthen the education sector so that children from common families receive the same opportunities to excel as anyone else. “Education is the strongest tool for empowering future generations and building a prosperous Punjab. The Punjab Government will leave no stone unturned in strengthening the education system and ensuring that every child gets an equal opportunity to succeed,” added CM Bhagwant Singh Mann.

Urging parents to trust their children and support their aspirations, the Chief Minister said that every child possesses unique abilities and talents that must be nurtured instead of being burdened with expectations that do not align with their interests. “Parents should identify and encourage the strengths of their children rather than forcing them into career paths that may not suit them. Stay grounded, remain humble and continue working hard. Use this platform not only to become successful officers but also to become fine human beings who contribute positively to society,” noted CM Bhagwant Singh Mann.

Expressing hope that the newly recruited officers would use their positions to serve the people, the Chief Minister said that public service must remain at the heart of their work. “Use your pen to help the needy and underprivileged sections of society. Ensure maximum welfare of the people so that every section of society benefits from your work. The initiative is designed to ensure that electoral rolls remain accurate, inclusive, and free from duplicate or outdated entries.

As part of the month-long campaign, more than 20,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit households across Haryana to distribute and collect enumeration forms and verify voter information. The verification process will continue until July 14, during which officials will make multiple visits to households to ensure maximum participation.

Election officials have stated that the exercise is the first comprehensive house-to-house voter verification drive in Haryana since 2002. Citizens who have attained the age of 18 years by July 1, 2026, will be eligible to enroll as new voters, while existing electors will have the opportunity to update or correct their details.

According to the Election Commission’s schedule, the draft electoral rolls will be published on July 21, followed by a period for claims and objections until August 20. After verification and disposal of objections, the final electoral rolls are scheduled to be published on September 22, 2026.

Authorities have appealed to residents to cooperate with BLOs during the verification process and ensure timely submission of required forms and documents. Dedicated helplines and assistance centres have also been established to support voters throughout the revision exercise.

Officials have stated that the airport will boost investment, tourism, logistics, and employment opportunities across western Uttar Pradesh and the wider NCR region. The launch marks the culmination of years of planning and construction for the flagship project.
