US election: Joe Biden wins US presidential election

Joe Biden has won the US election, managing to cross the 270-point threshold needed to become the 46th president of the United States.

Mr Biden won the battleground state of Pennsylvania’s 20 Electoral College votes to secure a total of 279.

Biden’s victory came after the Associated Press, CNN and NBC showed him winning Pennsylvania and gaining more than the 270 Electoral College votes needed to secure the presidency.

Trump sought to undermine the outcome, baselessly accusing Democrats of trying to steal the election and claiming victory before the race was called.

Biden prevailed by flipping key states that went to Trump in 2016, including Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Trump again won in Florida and Ohio, but in the end was unable to chart a path to an electoral victory. Biden also leads by millions in the popular vote, with a record number of votes cast this year, many through the mail.

As his vice president, Kamala Harris will make history in myriad ways, becoming the first woman — and the first woman of color — to occupy the office. Harris, a California senator and the state’s former attorney general, built a career in the tech industry’s front yard.

In a victory speech Saturday night in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, Biden said he was humbled by the trust America had placed in him and reached out to those Americans who did not vote for him.

“I understand the disappointment tonight. I’ve lost a couple of times myself. But now, let’s give each other a chance,” Biden said. “This is the time to heal in America.”

In Washington Square Park in Manhattan, hundreds gathered to cheer President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s victory, the afternoon’s celebrations carried on into the night, transforming the park into a cathartic commune.

Some shared bottles of champagne with strangers, while others waved Biden-Harris flags. People shimmied to drum circle rhythms, and on the west side of the park, the crowd sang lyrics in response to a trumpet’s blare: “Hey hey hey, goodbye.”

The Democrat managed to confine Donald Trump to a single term in office – bringing to a close four tumultuous years in the White House.

Biden, 77, will become the oldest president-elect in U.S. history and the first to oust a sitting commander-in-chief after one term since Bill Clinton defeated George H.W. Bush in 1992.

Kamala Harris makes history in speech as first elected women vice president of US

Kamala Harris just made history in her speech as the first woman to be elected vice president of the United States.

Kamala Harris said on Saturday (local time) that Americans have protected the integrity of democracy as she addressed the nation for the first time after a landslide victory in the US presidential election.

In her victory speech Saturday, Ms. Harris spoke of her mother and the generations of women of all races who paved the way for this moment. “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,” she told a cheering and honking audience in Wilmington, Del. “Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.”

During her speech, she highlighted the tireless work of Black women and women of color who continue to demand change within modern day politics and how her election comes 100 years after women gained the right to vote.

She also honored her late mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, who she often credits as a major inspiration and influence in her career and personal life.

“No matter who you voted for, I will strive to be the Vice President that Joe was to (former) president (Barack) Obama — loyal, honest and prepared, waking up every day thinking of you and your families. Because now is when the real work begins. You assured a new day for America,” Harris said in a powerful, but emotional speech.

“We are so grateful to Joe and Jill for welcoming our family into theirs on this incredible journey and to the woman, most responsible for my presence here today, my mother Shyamala Gopalan Harris, who was always in our hearts,” said the California Senator.

“When she came here from India at the age of 19, she maybe didn’t quite imagine this moment, but she believed so deeply in an America where a moment like this is possible. And so I’m thinking about her and about the generations of women—Black women—Asian, white, Latina, Native American women—who throughout our nation’s history paved the way for this moment tonight.

“Congressman John Lewis wrote before his passing: “Democracy is not a state. It is an act.” What he meant was that America’s democracy is not guaranteed. It is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it—and that’s exactly what you did,” she said in her first victory speech in  Wilmington, Delaware amid a huge round of applause.
