Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli had a nightmare outing in Dubai on Thursday when he and his Royal Chellengers Bangalore side played against the Kings XI Punjab. He dropped two catches and his team failed to maintain the required over-rate, he is now fined INR 12 lakhs ($16,295). Kohli’s side lost the game against KXIP by 97 runs.

Kohli dropped the catch of his counterpart KL Rahul twice. First time in the 17th over at deep square-leg when KL was on 83 and then again in the 18th over when he was on 89. Later on, KL Rahul went on scoring a terrific century and became the Indian highest run-scorer in IPL. Rahul also broked legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record to become the fastest Indian batsman to score 2,000 IPL runs. Rahul took 60 innings while Sachin took 63 innings during his time.

“I have to stand in front and take the brunt of it, not the best day in the office, couple of important chances of KL when he was set and that cost us 35-40 runs at a later stage. Maybe if we restricted them to 180 we wouldn’t have been under pressure from ball one of the chase. We know exactly where we went wrong and I have to put my hand up and say should’ve led from the front and taken those two chances,” said Kohli at the post-match presentation.

Jones, 59, passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest in his hotel in Mumbai where he was on his assignment with the broadcasting team of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Jones was in full jovial self on Thursday morning, but by the afternoon, he was passed away. Australian bowler who was also in the same hotel did everything to revive Jones, but he failed.

Legendary Indian World-Cup winning captain Kapil Dev also showed condolence to the Australian veteran batsman.

“Deano was quite a dear friend of mine and I was shocked to hear the news of his passing away. I feel quite sad and sorry for his family. You are going to miss him, but his family is going to suffer the most. I knew him for about 35 years,” Kapil, who first played against Jones during the 1985 World Championship of Cricket in Australia, told IANS.

“He was a great cricketer and one of the best athletes. He was a master at running between the wickets. He was also a great commentator and had a wonderful sense of humour,” said the 1983 World Cup-winning captain.

“No other foreign cricketer has perhaps traveled to India as many times as Deano. He would have visited India more than 100 times. But now he is gone; he was not even 60 years old. Even Malcolm Marshall passed away quite young [aged 41 years 200 days in November 1999],” he said.

Kapil faced Jones in 20 ODI innings and took his wicket four times – twice bowled and as many twice caught as well – and in 15 Test innings, the Kapil Dev got him out twice.

“A day that changed my life forever,” Jones tweeted on September 19, on the 34th anniversary of the tied Test. Another tweet read: “This Test was the renaissance for Australian cricket. It was our Mt Everest moment. Under AB [Allan Border] we started to believe that we can compete against the best. Great friendships started with the Indians. Our journey had just begun!”

Jones carved a career as a commentator and cricket analyst after his retirement from all forms of cricket in 1997. He was the part of Cricket Australia’s various operations. Somewhere along the line, he was nicknamed ‘Professor Deano’ and he named his Twitter to handle @ProfDeano.

Telecom giant Vodafone wins international arbitration against India

Telecom giant Vodafone on Friday won a significant ruling against the Indian government in an international court over Rs 20,000 crore in dues which it had described as unfair.

Sumit Mangal, Partner, L&L Partners said: “This is a landmark victory for Vodafone and will set a good precedent for others to take international tax issues to international arbitration.

It also resolves the controversy that tax issues could be contested under Investment Treaties or Bilateral Investment Promotion and Investment Agreement (BIPA) entered into by India with other countries.

An international arbitration tribunal in The Hague ruled that India’s imposition of tax liability on Vodafone, as well as interest and penalties, were in a breach of an investment treaty agreement between India and the Netherlands, one of the sources said.

Observing that the retrospective taxation despite the Supreme Court’s judgment in favour of Vodafone was in breach of the bilateral investment treaty, the court has directed India to reimburse a sum of Rs 40.3 crore (GBP 4.3 Million) to Vodafone.

The telco had moved the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2016 due to a lack of consensus between the parties’ arbitrators in finalising a judge for the tax dispute.

Vodafone had before the arbitration tribunal challenged India’s usage of a 2012 legislation that gave it powers to retrospectively tax deals like Vodafone’s $11 billion acquisition of 67% stake in the mobile phone business owned by Hutchison Whampoa in 2007. It challenged the demand of Rs 7,990 crore in capital gains taxes (Rs 22,100 crore after including interest and penalty) under the Netherlands-India Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT).

Sources said the tax demand was on the UK-listed company and Vodafone’s India venture faced no liability. Vodafone merged its India operations with billionaire Kumar Mangalam Birla’s conglomerate but the combined entity Vodafone Idea Ltd is facing a $7.8 billion bill in past statutory dues.

Tax authorities had in September 2007 served notice to Vodafone International Holdings BV (VIHBV) for its alleged failure to deduct withholding tax from consideration paid to the Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd. Vodafone challenged this in the Supreme Court, which in January 2012 set it aside, saying the transaction was not taxable in India and so the company had no obligation to withhold tax.

Spurred by the news, on Friday Vodafone Idea’s scrip on BSE closed 12% higher at ₹10.20.

Kashmiris don’t feel they are Indian, Farooq Abdullah

‘Kashmiris prefer Chinese rule’

‘Kashmiris treated as second class citizens’

‘Kashmiris have not accepted abrogation of Article 370 by Centre’

National Conference President and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday said that Kashmiris do not feel like Indians, even claiming that they would rather have the Chinese in the area, according to The Wire.

In an interview with The Wire, Abdullah described the Kashmiris as ‘slaves’ who were being treated like second class citizens, saying that they have lost all trust in the Modi government.

”To be honest, I wonder whether they (Modi govt) will find somebody who will call himself an Indian today. What they did on 5th August last year, was the last nail in the coffin of India. And that’s what they did. You go and talk to anybody; they don’t want to be known as Indians,” the National Conference chief told Karan Thapar in the interview.

In a 44-minute interview to  The Wire, Abdullah said it was complete rubbish for the Bharatiya Janata Party to claim that the people of Kashmir have accepted the August 2019 changes just because there have been no protests.

He said if the soldiers on every street and Section 144 were to be lifted, people will come out in their tens of lakhs. Abdullah told The Wire that the new domicile law was intended to flood the Valley with Hindus and create a Hindu majority. He said this has further embittered the Kashmiri people.

Abdullah was among the various Jammu and Kashmir leaders who were put into pre-emptive detention on August 5 last year after the Centre abrogated Article 370.

After the Centre set up the commission to redraw parliamentary and assembly constituencies based on the recent census in Jammu & Kashmir, Abdullah said the BJP wants Hindu majority to emerge in the Muslim majority region.

Farooq who was detained under Public Safety Act was released in March.

‘Distasteful’: Anushka Sharma hits back at Sunil Gavaskar over his remark about Virat Kohli’s performance

Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma has slammed legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar for using her name to criticise husband Virat Kohli’s performance against KXIP on Thursday.

Kohli, who leads Royal Challengers Bangalore, not only dropped two crucial catches but also failed with the bat, managing just a run off five balls.

The cricketer even admitted that his mistakes on the field led to a 97-run defeat against Kings XI Punjab at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Targeting Kohli’s poor form on the field, top commentator Gavaskar, in the commentary box came up with a very disgraceful comment against him involving his wife Anushka.

Gavaskar reportedly said, “Inhone lockdown me to bas Anushka ki gendon ki practice ki hain”. (Virat Kohli has only trained against Anushka’s balls during the lockdown)

His comment, obviously, did not go down well with netizens as they trolled the former cricketer back and forth on Twitter. Now, in the latest, Anushka has hit back at Gavaskar for his remark.

Anushka took to Instagram Stories and posted a long note expressing disapproval over Gavaskar’s comment.

Anushka Sharma took to her Instagram stories to reply Sunil Gavaskar

She wrote: “That, Mr Gavaskar, your message is distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on a wife accusing her for her husband’s game? I’m sure over the years you have respected the private lives of every cricketer while commenting on the game. Don’t you think you should have equal amount of respect for me and us?”

“I’m sure you can have many other words and sentences in your mind to use to comment on my husband’s performance from last night or yourwords only relevant if you use my name in the process?”

“It’s 2020 and things still don’t change for me. When will I stop getting dragged into cricket and stop being used to pass sweeping statements?”

“Respected Mr. Gavaskar, you are a legend whose name stands tall in this gentleman’s game. Just wanted to tell you what I felt when I heard you say this.”

This is not the first time that Anushka has fallen prey to mockery by renowned figures and cricket lovers over Virat’s performance on the field. Back in 2015, Virat Kohli’s poor form in the ODI Cricket World Cup also made her a constant subject of trolling with many asking the couple to break up.

Virat then took the matter into his own hand and said it was nothing but a matter of “shame” to hold Anushka accountable for his performance.

Anushka and Virat have been married for over two and a half year now. The couple who started dating in 2013 tied the knot in a private ceremony in 2017.
