Assam Board cuts class 12 syllabus up to 30 per cent amid covid-19 pandemic

Covid-19 pandemic has affected the education sector in a tremendous way, students have not been able to attend the classes and the e-learning model is not very effective in India yet.

Considering all the factors The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) has reduced 30% of the syllabus of classes XI and XII. Following the norms for the pandemic and restrictions of the lockdown students haven’t been able to attend classes for months now, this decision will certainly help to reduce the mental burden on them.

Lessons on Jawaharlal Nehru, the Mandal Commission report, the 2002 Gujarat riots and writings on caste and marginalisation have been removed from the Class 12 state board syllabus in Assam.

In Political Science, the removed sections under the topic ‘Politics in India since Independence’ are: ‘First three general elections; Nehru’s approach to nation-building; Famine and suspension of five year plans; Nehru’s foreign policy; Political succession after Nehru; Politics of Garibi Hatao; Navnirman movement in Gujarat; Punjab crisis and the anti-Sikh riots of 1984; Implementation of Mandal Commission report; UF and NDA governments; Elections 2004 and UPA government; Ayodhya dispute; and Gujarat riots’.

In History, ‘Kinship, Caste and Class’ section has been omitted while English no longer include ‘Memories of Childhood.’

“It is well known to all that due to Pandemic Novel Corona Virus (COVID-19) students of our state (have) already lost valued academic time. After the CBSE decided to reduce the volume of the course for class XI & XII, the AHSEC was seriously deliberating upon the issue,” wrote Manoranjan Kakati, Secretary of the AHSEC.

“The main objective is to reduce the exam stress of the students of the session 2020-21, due to this pandemic situation and to prevent learning gaps,” he added.

A senior board official said in July, the AHSEC had sought views from the principals of colleges and schools and most of them were in favor of reducing the volume of course contents. Based on their feedback and instructions from state education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the academic committee meeting of the AHSEC has finally given the go-ahead to the decision.

Rhea and her brother Showik Chakraborty have moved the Bombay High Court, seeking a bail. Their lawyer Satish Maneshinde said that the bail application will be heard tomorrow.

She also stated that Sushant Singh Rajput “took advantage of those closest to him to sustain his drug habit”.

Rhea was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau on September 8 for her alleged involvement in a drug case linked to Sushant’s death. Before this, she was remanded to 14-day judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the NCB has called in Sushant’s former manager Shruti Modi and talent manager Jaya Saha for more questioning. Sources say NCB is likely to arrest Jaya Saha in connection with the drug cartel case.

“Humble tributes to ‘Rashtra Kavi’ Ramdhari Singh Dinkar Ji on his birth anniversary. His timeless poems will continue to inspire not only literature-lovers but all countrymen,” Modi tweeted in Hindi.

RamdhariSingh was an Indian Hindi poet, essayist, patriot and academic, who is considered as one of the most important modern Hindi poets.

He remerged as a poet of rebellion as a consequence of his nationalist poetry written in the days before Indian independence. His poetry exuded veer rasa, and he has been hailed as a Rashtrakavi (“national poet”) on account of his inspiring patriotic compositions.

He was a regular poet of Hindi Kavi sammelan on those days and is hailed to be as popular and connected to poetry lovers for Hindi speakers as Pushkin for  Russians.

Covid-19 vaccine to have efficacy between 50-100%: ICMR

India registered nearly 83,000 fresh cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, which took the overall case count in the country past the 56-lakh mark.

According to the health ministry, the number of total recoveries remained more than the number of new infections for the fifth consecutive day. Total recoveries in the country are now more than 45 lakh, pushing the recovery rate to 80.86%.

With several vaccines at the human trials stage Meanwhile, Dr. Balram Bhargava, the director general of Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) had stated that no vaccines for respiratory diseases has 100% efficacy and the ones who have efficacy between 50% to 100% can only be accepted.

“All the vaccines for respiratory viruses are not 100% effective. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that there are three things key for a vaccine: safety (how safe it is for human use), immunogenicity (whether it is able to provoke body’s immune response) and its efficacy (how effective it is against the virus),” said director general, ICMR, Dr Balram Bhargava.

“And WHO says even if we get 50% efficacy that is more than acceptable. So for respiratory viruses we will never get a vaccine with 100% efficacy. We are obviously aiming at 100% efficacy but we may get anywhere between 50 to 100%,” he added.

The comment comes a day after drug regulator, Central Drugs and Standard Control Organization, issued a draft guidance note for COVID-19 vaccines that suggested researchers may not necessarily look for the preventive capacity of a candidate, and settled or one that protects a person from developing severe infection.

Congress lists 3 demands to end boycott of Rajya Sabha

Highlights:

A number of opposition parties led by Congress walked out of both houses

They also requested to revoke the suspension of eight members

The MPs were suspended over chaos, “unruly behaviour” in Rajya Sabha

Speaking about the decision to walk out, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad declared that until the suspension of the eight MPs is revoked, and their three demands to strengthen the minimum support price (MSP) structure are not met, his party will not participate in any further proceedings.

Azad made pointed demands on Tuesday morning. He said that a Bill should be brought in to prevent private players from procuring food grains below the MSP set by the government on the basis of the formula recommended by the M.S. Swaminathan Committee report. He also demanded that the government or the Food Corporation of India (FCI) should ensure that crops are procured from the farmers at the fixed MSP.

The suspended members continued their sit-in on the lawns of the parliament complex till about 11.30 AM after spending the night there in protest. They were suspended over chaos and “unruly behaviour” in the Rajya Sabha on Sunday when two controversial farm bills were passed.

The Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman is at the heart of the protests; the no-confidence motion against him was rejected yesterday by Chairman Venkaiah Naidu.

Meanwhile, the government said it will consider revoking the suspension of eight Rajya Sabha members only after they apologise for their behaviour in the Upper House, Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Tuesday, news agency PTI reported.

Among the parties that boycotted the proceedings of the House included the Congress, which was the among the first to walk out, followed by members of the CPI-M, CPI, TMC, NCP, SP, Shiv Sena, RJD, DMK, TRS and AAP (in RS).

Till late night, the protesting MPs raised slogans and sang songs. The MPs spent the night on the lawns of Parliament complex before joining other opposition leaders to walk to President Ram Nath Kovind’s official residence to bring his attention to the issue.

In the morning, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Singh met the suspended MPs and offered them tea. However, the protesting lawmakers reportedly refused to have tea with him.

Facebook removes 150 Chinese accounts posting about US presidential election

Facebook on Tuesday removes around 150 accounts that were being operated from China and spread false information about US presidential elections scheduled to be conducted on November 3.

“We removed 155 accounts, eleven pages, nine groups and six Instagram accounts for violating our policy against foreign or government interference which is coordinated inauthentic behaviour on behalf of a foreign or government entity,” Facebook said in a statement.

“This activity originated in China and focused primarily on the Philippines and Southeast Asia more broadly, and also on the United States.”

Facebook’s head of security policy, Nathaniel Giecher, in a post said the accounts ” posted content both in support of and against presidential candidates Pete Buttigieg, Joe Biden and Donald Trump.”

The accounts posted in Chinese, Filipino and English and also posted news and events happening across the globe including naval activity in the South China Sea, protests in Hong Kong and President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines.

US intelligence officials have suspected that China, along with Russia and Iran, are attempting to interfere in the November election as the country’s collectively hold grudges against President Donald Trump.

Earlier, Facebook had removed a small network of accounts which indicated their inks with Russian agency.

Apart from 155 Facebook accounts, Facebook has removed 11 pages, 9 groups and 6 Instagram accounts who attracted more than 130,000 followers worldwide. Out of which, only 3,000 were based in the U.S. According to the company, the accounts were removed as a process to curb misinformation and make Facebook a safer place for every community.

Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, earlier said that the company is taking steps to “encourage voting, miminimize misinformation and reduce civil unrest” ahead of November election.

“This is not going to be business as usual. We all have a responsibility to protect our democracy. That means helping people register and vote, clearing up confusion about how this election will work and taking steps to reduce the chances of violence and unrest,” Zuckerberg said.
