Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced the fourth season of “Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan,” the state’s flagship sports movement designed to give young Punjabis a powerful, healthy alternative to drug abuse. The games will kick off on September 5 from Bathinda and conclude with a grand closing ceremony in Patiala, promising the biggest edition yet.
A Record-Breaking Turnout Expected
This season is set to be the largest so far, with organisers expecting more than 10 lakh players to take part across the state. Age is no barrier here; the games are built to bring together three generations of one family, from teenagers to grandparents, competing on the same playing fields. That spirit of “khed di ek pushat” (one sporting generation) is central to what makes this initiative different from a typical tournament.
Punjab’s Biggest-Ever Sports Budget
For the first time in the state’s history, the Punjab government has set aside a massive ₹1,794 crore exclusively for sports. This isn’t just prize money, it’s an investment in the foundations of grassroots sport. The plan includes building 3,148 new playgrounds and 6,000 gyms in villages across Punjab, so that talent from even the smallest towns doesn’t go undiscovered for lack of facilities.
Focus on Sports Medicine and Athlete Care
Alongside infrastructure, the government is putting special emphasis on sports medicine, a sign that this programme is moving beyond just organising matches and towards building a genuine sporting ecosystem where injured or developing athletes get proper medical support and recovery care.
Why This Initiative Matters
Punjab has long struggled with drug abuse among its youth, and the state government has repeatedly framed sports as one of its strongest tools to fight this crisis. By getting families and communities physically active together, Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan aims to do more than crown champions; it wants to rebuild a culture where playgrounds, not addiction, define how young Punjabis spend their time. With this level of funding and reach, Season 4 could mark a turning point in that mission.
