After heavy rains overnight, Delhi woke up to flooded streets and terrible traffic jams on Sunday morning. This made it hard for people to get around and live their normal lives in the city and the National Capital Region (NCR). Some low-lying areas, like Connaught Place, Safdarjung, Panchkuian Road, and parts of Gurugram and Noida, got knee-deep in water, which caused huge traffic jams and made it hard for people to get to work. Some of the worst-hit roads were ITO, Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Dhaula Kuan, and the Azad Market underpass.
IMD sends out an orange alert saying that rain is expected to keep falling
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) sent out an orange alert for Delhi-NCR, saying that light to moderate rain would be followed by thunderstorms and winds gusting up to 40 km/h. The rain is going to last all day, and the high temperature will be 30 to 32 degrees Celsius and the low temperature will be 23 to 25 degrees Celsius. Almost the whole city is dark and damp because it has been raining nonstop.
Key roads like ITO, Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Dhaula Kuan, and Azad Market underpass were among the worst affected. Additionally, as reported by NDTV India on X, heavy rains have led to waterlogging in several other areas, including Minto Bridge and Vijay Chowk, further intensifying the flooding situation across the city.
Monsoon hit the southwest and central parts of Delhi
New data from IMD shows that it rained more than 30 to 40 mm in central Delhi places like Safdarjung (39.1 mm), Pusa (41 mm), Palam (34.6 mm), and Najafgarh (25.5 mm) over the last 24 hours, up until early Sunday morning. Some parts of southwest Delhi got more than 50 mm of rain, which made the waterlogging problem worse.
The government is working to fix drainage problems
Authorities are trying to fix the drainage and flooding problems that have happened over and over again in the city during the monsoon. It is said that the Delhi government is speeding up plans to improve drainage systems and set up real-time monitoring with quick response units to help reduce flooding and the problems it causes for commuters.
Warning to the public: Be careful while it rains
People in the area are being told to be careful on the roads and stay away from waterlogged places if they can. The monsoon continues to provide relief from the very hot summer weather, but it also makes it harder to get around and go about daily life in the city.
Keeping up with the latest news on traffic and weather
