Neurologist\’s Note on Skipping Dementia

AIIMS Delhi\’s neurologist, Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat, recently shared three exclusive tips to avoid dementia in the late 60s. She took her Instagram handle to spread awareness that maintaining an antioxidant-rich diet, 30 30-minute daily workout, and good sleep are the boons to kill dementia.

She emphasises the importance of incorporating a variety of walnuts, berries, moringa, and other green, leafy vegetables into the daily diet. They offer antioxidants, which are extremely important for neuron regeneration. 

She further emphasised the importance of aerobic exercises, including at least 30 minutes of daily physical activity, such as cycling, running, or walking. Lastly, she points out the use of sleep hygiene techniques to improve sleep quality. Avoiding screens after 8, bathing, and reading before bed can help in sound sleep and reduce dementia.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a chronic and progressive condition that affects the brain’s ability to function properly. It leads to a gradual decline in memory, reasoning, language, and other cognitive abilities. This decline is caused by damage to or the loss of brain cells, which interferes with how messages are transmitted within the brain.

As the damage spreads, it becomes increasingly difficult for a person to think clearly, make decisions, or even carry out simple everyday tasks. One of the most recognized forms of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which typically develops in older adults. It often begins with mild memory loss but gradually worsens over time, affecting a person\’s ability to communicate, recognize loved ones, or manage their daily life independently.

While aging is a major risk factor, dementia is not a normal part of getting older. It is a medical disorder that requires understanding, support, and care both for those who suffer from it and for the families who support them.

The Increasing Cases of Dementia In India

Dementia is no longer just a growing concern in Western countries. India too is witnessing a sharp rise in the number of dementia cases. According to the Dementia India Report 2020 by the Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI), over 5.3 million Indians were living with dementia in 2020. This number is expected to nearly double by 2030 and reach around 14 million by 2050 due to the country’s rapidly aging population.

Despite the growing numbers, a majority of cases still go undiagnosed. This is largely because of low awareness, lack of trained professionals, and limited access to geriatric mental health services in many parts of the country. Families often mistake the symptoms of dementia for normal signs of aging and delay seeking help.

However, some positive change is happening. Dedicated professionals like Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat are working to improve early diagnosis and treatment. Simple lifestyle measures, such as regular physical activity, a balanced diet, mental exercises, and social engagement from an early age, can significantly reduce the risk of developing dementia later in life.
