Joint pain is a common issue for people over 40. Many experience morning stiffness, discomfort while walking, or knee pain that gradually worsens. What most don’t realise is that small, everyday habits can silently damage your joints over time. According to Delhi-based doctor Saleem Zaidi, these hidden mistakes are often the main culprits behind joint problems, and correcting them can significantly reduce pain and improve mobility.
In a recent video on his YouTube channel Healthy Hamesha, Dr Zaidi shared seven daily mistakes that weaken joints and practical steps to protect them. Here’s what you need to know.
Common Habits That Worsen Joint Pain
- Assuming Joint Pain Is Just A Bone Problem
Many people believe joint pain is only caused by weak bones. This leads them to rely solely on calcium or vitamin D supplements. However, joints are more than just bones – they include cartilage, ligaments, nerves, joint fluid, and blood circulation. Focusing only on bones ignores the rest of the system, which can make pain worse over time.
Tips to protect your joints:
- Take one teaspoon of desi ghee daily to lubricate joints.
- Eat one or two cloves of garlic on an empty stomach to improve blood circulation.
- Drink turmeric milk at night to reduce internal inflammation.
- Relying on Painkillers Too Soon
Painkillers may mask pain, but they do not fix the underlying damage. Pressure inside the joint continues, causing cartilage to wear faster. Use painkillers sparingly and instead focus on anti-inflammatory foods and healthy fats. - Avoiding Healthy Fats
Skipping ghee or other healthy fats can make joints dry, stiff, and prone to nerve pain. Healthy fats also help absorb calcium and vitamin D. Include controlled amounts of desi ghee or healthy oils in your daily diet while avoiding refined oils. - Consuming Cold Foods and Drinks
Drinking chilled water, eating cold yoghurt or drinking cold beverages can increase joint stiffness, especially in the morning or during winter. Start your day with warm water and keep your joints warm in colder months. - Late and Heavy Dinners
Eating heavy food late at night slows digestion and causes toxin buildup. This often leads to morning stiffness. Finish dinner by 7–8 pm and opt for a light meal. - Extreme Exercise Habits
Both complete rest and overexercising are harmful. Gentle, consistent movement like daily walks or light stretching helps maintain joint health. Consistency matters more than intensity. - Not Drinking Enough Water
Hydration is essential for joint lubrication. Dehydration dries out cartilage and irritates nerves. Drink enough water and limit tea, coffee, and alcohol.
Age alone does not have to mean pain. Many active people continue climbing stairs and walking comfortably in their 50s or 60s. Joint pain develops slowly over the years, but correcting habits now can gradually improve your joints.
