About The Festival

Guru Nanak Jayanti is very special for Sikhs and for many others who follow his path of peace and equality. This year, the festival falls on November 5, 2025. It marks the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The festival is also known as Gurpurab or Prakash Utsav.

Celebrations started a few days ago. Gurdwaras held the Akhand Path, a continuous 48-hour reading of the Guru Granth Sahib. Colourful Nagar Kirtan processions also took place. Devotees sang hymns and carried sacred flags. Many also performed Gatka (a traditional Sikh martial art). The Panj Pyare (known as the Five Beloved Ones) led the processions with pride and devotion.

On the main day, prayers began before sunrise. People took part in Prabhat Pheris and joined morning kirtan. The Langar (a free community kitchen) played a key role as always. People from all backgrounds sat together and shared meals, showing equality and unity. This reflects Guru Nanak’s message of serving humanity.

By evening, gurdwaras will glow with lights and candles. The Golden Temple in Amritsar will look stunning, with its reflection shining in the holy water. Devotees visit in large numbers to pray and soak in the spiritual atmosphere.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings continue to guide millions. He encouraged three key principles: remember God (Naam Japna), work honestly (Kirat Karni) and share with others (Vand Chakna). He opposed discrimination and inequality. He believed that all human beings are equal and must live with kindness and truth.
