Officials said the move is being considered in view of growing passenger traffic and improved connectivity in the region. The expansion is expected to significantly enhance seat availability, particularly during peak tourist seasons and pilgrimage periods linked to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra.

The Katra–Srinagar corridor forms a crucial part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, one of Indian Railways’ most ambitious infrastructure undertakings. With improved rail connectivity to the Valley, authorities anticipate increased tourism, smoother movement of residents, and enhanced economic activity.

Railway sources indicated that technical feasibility, platform length adjustments, and operational logistics are being assessed before implementing the 20-coach configuration. If approved, the upgrade would make the service one of the longer Vande Bharat formations currently operating in the country.

The Vande Bharat Express, known for its modern design, faster acceleration, and passenger amenities, has been positioned as a symbol of next-generation rail travel in India. The proposed upgrade is expected to further strengthen connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir’s key regions while addressing rising travel demand.

Railway officials indicated that the proposed upgrade will also require operational adjustments, including scheduling refinements and maintenance planning, to ensure seamless integration of the longer rake. Technical teams are assessing platform capacities at key stations along the route to accommodate the extended train length without disrupting services.

Authorities believe the enhanced capacity will particularly benefit local commuters, students, traders, and tourists travelling between the Jammu division and the Kashmir Valley. Improved connectivity is expected to reduce dependence on road travel, especially during adverse weather conditions when highway movement is often affected.

The development is also seen as a major boost to regional economic growth. Easier rail access is likely to support tourism, horticulture trade, and small businesses by facilitating faster and more reliable transport of passengers and light goods.
