Noida News: Heavy Rains Trigger Massive Road Cave-ins in Greater Noida; Thousands Affected

Torrential overnight rainfall on Thursday led to two major road cave-ins at critical locations in Greater Noida, disrupting traffic flow and forcing thousands of residents to find alternative routes. The incidents have once again exposed the city\’s inadequate drainage infrastructure and fragile road systems.

Collapse Near Gaur City Affects Thousands

The first cave-in occurred on the crucial stretch connecting Gaur City to Haibatpur village, a lifeline for over 6,000 residents living in nearby high-rise apartments. The road, adjacent to the NBCC\’s Amrapali Golf Homes Phase II project, was completely washed away. The sudden collapse forced commuters to take long detours to reach key locations such as Gaur Chowk, Noida, and Ghaziabad.

Shahberi Road Caves In Weeks After Redevelopment

In another alarming incident, a portion of the Crossings Republik-Shahberi road — recently redeveloped by the Greater Noida Authority in May — caved in near Morpheus Bluebell society. The 3km stretch suffered extensive damage due to water seepage from an adjoining drainage channel.

“The road collapse disrupted traffic and damaged water and sewage pipelines,” said Subhash, a resident of Haibatpur village, blaming poorly maintained drains for the damage. Locals also faced widespread waterlogging and power outages in the aftermath.

Temporary Repairs, Traffic Restrictions in Place

Contractual workers at the Amrapali site rushed to restore temporary connectivity using truckloads of soil, while traffic police restricted movement to a single operational lane on the Shahberi road, which normally supports two-way traffic.

“Such cave-ins during rain are not just inconvenient — they are outright dangerous, especially at night,” said Dharmendra, a resident of Iteda village, voicing concerns about potential accidents.

Greater Noida Authority Begins Repair Work

Officials from the Greater Noida Authority confirmed that repair work on both damaged stretches is underway. “Yes, the matter is in our knowledge and work has started. The roads will be restored soon,” an official assured.

To tackle the broader issue of waterlogging, multiple teams have been deployed, including work circle engineers and senior officials like the General Manager, OSD, and Additional CEO, who have visited the affected sites.

CEO NG Ravi Kumar directed officials to remain on-site until waterlogging issues are resolved. “As soon as we received reports of the Haibatpur cave-in and Shahberi erosion, we deployed teams to the field immediately,” he said.

NBCC Points to Drainage System Failure

An NBCC official cited persistent rain and drainage choke points as the main culprits. “Around midnight, the road north of the Amrapali project was damaged due to continuous heavy rain and a blocked drainage system. This stretch is close to Haibatpur and Shahberi, where an already choked drain and a low-lying area collect wastewater. The intense rainfall overwhelmed this system, leading to overflow and road collapse,” the official explained.

The incidents have reignited concerns over urban planning and disaster readiness in rapidly growing residential zones of Greater Noida. Residents are demanding permanent solutions to prevent such infrastructure failures in the future.
