Uttarakhand News: Centre Seeks Uttarakhand’s Nod for Tanakpur-Bageshwar Rail Line; Work May Begin Soon

In a significant development for Uttarakhand’s infrastructure, the Central Government has sought formal approval from the state to begin work on the Tanakpur–Bageshwar rail line, reigniting hopes for improved connectivity in the Kumaon region. The state government is expected to send its official consent to the Centre soon, paving the way for groundwork to begin.

The 170-km long rail project is considered a key step towards expanding the rail network in the remote and hilly regions of Kumaon. Officials said the final location survey has already been completed, and the next step involves consultations and clearances from the state.

A Game-Changer for Kumaon

The Tanakpur–Bageshwar line is being described as a game-changer project that will bring much-needed rail access to the interior districts of the Kumaon region. Once operational, the rail line will boost connectivity, tourism, trade, and ease of movement for residents in areas currently underserved by rail infrastructure.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed the state’s Chief Secretary to expedite all formalities and send the required approval to the Centre without delay, signaling the state’s commitment to supporting the project.

Garhwal-Kumaon to Be Linked Via Rail

Once the Tanakpur–Bageshwar route is complete, it will allow for the possibility of connecting Bageshwar to Karnaprayag, thus creating a rail corridor between Garhwal and Kumaon, the two major regions of Uttarakhand. This will significantly strengthen regional integration and economic growth.

Karnaprayag Rail Line to Be Ready by 2026

Parallel to this, the Rishikesh–Karnaprayag rail project, a strategic and high-priority undertaking, is progressing rapidly. The Karnaprayag line is expected to be completed by 2026, and will further integrate Uttarakhand’s mountainous districts with the national rail network.

With both projects in motion, Uttarakhand is on course to witness a historic transformation in its rail connectivity, ensuring easier access to remote areas, boosting tourism, and enhancing the state’s strategic preparedness in border zones.
