Mamata Banerjee: Existential Crisis Ahead For TMC Supremo! Senior Party Leaders And Coalition Partners Dump Didi, Who Is Next To Jump Ship?

Mamata Banerjee: Electoral setbacks, internal rebellion, accusations of corruption, public criticism of the party’s second-rung leadership and a widening trust deficit among opposition parties have combined to create what may be the gravest political crisis of Mamata Banerjee’s career.

Mamata Banerjee: For nearly two decades, Mamata Banerjee has dominated the political landscape of West Bengal with a mix of street-fighter aggression, populist welfare politics and a carefully cultivated image of a lone warrior taking on powerful adversaries. However, Mamata is now fighting a lone battle and possible existential crisis after Trinamool Congress (TMC) lost the recently concluded West Bengal state assembly elections to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Fall Of Mamata Banerjee

Electoral setbacks, internal rebellion, accusations of corruption, public criticism of the party’s second-rung leadership and a widening trust deficit among opposition parties have combined to create what may be the gravest political crisis of Mamata Banerjee’s career.

The warning signs are no longer subtle as senior leaders are speaking out, party spokespersons are being suspended, former loyalists are turning critics and even opposition allies that Banerjee hoped to rally against the BJP have publicly rejected her overtures.

Opposition Shuts The Door On Mamata

The first major blow came when the Congress, the Left Front, and the CPI-ML (Liberation) flatly rejected Mamata Banerjee’s proposal for a united anti-BJP platform. Banerjee had attempted to revive her long-standing pitch of opposition unity, positioning herself once again as a central pillar in the national anti-BJP discourse.

CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim dismissed the idea outright, saying the Left would not align with anyone identified as criminal, extortionist, corrupt and communal. The Congress’s State Congress spokesperson Soumya Aich Roy mocked Banerjee’s appeal and questioned her remarks regarding ultra-Left forces. The response referenced the killing of Congress leaders in Chhattisgarh in 2013, accusing Banerjee of irresponsibility and political opportunism.

CPI State secretary Swapan Banerjee declared that democracy was in peril during Mamata Banerjee’s regime, shutting down any possibility of future cooperation.

The TMC today is witnessing something unusual for a party long controlled with iron discipline. The suspension of three party spokespersons in Riju Dutta, Kohinoor Majumdar and Kartik Ghosh reflects the growing nervousness within the leadership.

Critics within the party increasingly believe that the TMC’s grassroots culture has been replaced by excessive centralisation and a shrinking decision-making structure because of Abhishek Banerjee.
