Mamata Banerjee: West Bengal Governor RN Ravi has dissolved the state assembly paving the way for the first Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The emphatic victory of the BJP over Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress (TMC) has fundamentally changed the political landscape of West Bengal. The state has now entered a dramatic phase marked by defiance, constitutional brinkmanship and an intense internal race within the BJP over who will become the party’s first Chief Minister in Bengal.

Mamata Banerjee-No Resign Drama Ends

Former West Bengal Chief Minister threatened that she would not submit her resignation as the state assembly elections were not fairly conducted. However, West Bengal Governor has put an end to all the drama of TMC and Mamata Banerjee.

WB Governor dissolved the state assembly by virtue of the power under sub-clause (2) of Clause (2) of Article 174 of the Indian Constitution with effect from May 7, 2026.

Shaken Political Foundations Of West Bengal

For years, Bengal remained the BJP’s most elusive political prize. The party repeatedly failed to dislodge the Trinamool Congress machinery built meticulously by Mamata Banerjee. However, the 2026 assembly elections rewrote the entire script. Large numbers of urban Bengal, sections of rural districts and even several traditional TMC strongholds reportedly swung in favour of the saffron party. The result sent shockwaves through Kolkata’s political establishment.

Suvendu Adhikari vs Agnimitra Paul

The BJP may have achieved its dream victory in Bengal, but the party now faces a delicate internal balancing act. Unlike several other states where leadership transitions were clear before elections, Bengal’s BJP ecosystem contains multiple power centres.

At the forefront of the Chief Ministerial race stands Suvendu Adhikari, the man many credit for architecting the BJP’s expansion in the state. A former Trinamool heavyweight, Adhikari’s defection dramatically altered Bengal’s political arithmetic years ago. His organizational reach, deep understanding of district-level politics and aggressive anti-TMC positioning make him the most experienced contender.

Critics within the BJP may prefer a cleaner, fresher face capable of broadening the BJP’s appeal among women, urban middle-class voters and younger Bengalis.

Agnimitra Paul represents a very different political template. Articulate, media-savvy and increasingly popular among younger BJP supporters, she embodies the party’s attempt to project a modern Bengali leadership face. Her strong attacks against the TMC have earned her visibility far beyond Kolkata’s political circles. The elevation of Agnimitra Paul could also help the party consolidate women voters, a demographic that Mamata Banerjee traditionally dominated.

The Entry Of Rupa Ganguly

Rupa Ganguly, the veteran actor-turned-politician who is best known for playing the character of Draupadi in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat, may be a surprise package for the BJP CM vision. She enjoys strong recall value among Bengali voters and carries a comparatively less divisive image than several hardline BJP leaders. Ganguly has long been associated with the party’s ideological battles in Bengal and remains respected within sections of the cadre.
