BCCI: Board in tumbles? Emergency meeting called upon as “BYJU’s” desperate to leave sponsorship despite request

BCCI: An urgent meeting has been scheduled for today by the Indian cricket board. Sponsor BYJU’s, who is anxiously trying to leave has caused the BCCI Apex Council Meeting which is in a pickle. Although the BCCI requested an extension until March, the Ed-Tech industry leaders still sought to end their contract. The gathering will take place digitally. The meeting’s agenda also reportedly includes payment from Star Sports for media rights.

BCCI earlier requested BYJU’s to continue

The board had requested the ed-tech firm to remain at least until March 2023 in the meeting held last month, despite BYJUS’s desire to end its contract with the BCCI. Recently, the corporation indicated intentions to let go of up to 5% of its 50000-person workforce.

The BCCI and Byju’s have renewed their shirt sponsorship arrangement to November 2023. The transaction probably cost 35 million USD. Back in 2019, the company took over for Oppo. In addition, Byju’s sponsored the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

According to a note earlier issued by the Board, “BCCI received an email from Byju’s on 4.11.2022 requesting terminating the association post the recently concluded T20 World Cup. As per our discussions with Byju’s, we have asked them to continue the current arrangement and continue the partnership at least until 31.3.2023.”

Media rights will go renewal on March 2023

The media rights for Indian cricket’s domestic season are currently held by Star. After March, the rights will be available for renewal, and big names will be competing for them.

The BCCI sold the media rights to the IPL for the 2023–2027 cycle last year for a staggering Rs 48390 crore. For Rs 23,575 crore, Star acquired the TV rights. For a total of 23,758 crore, Viacom18 received the digital rights for the Indian subcontinent.

In the previous six months, the BCCI lost three significant sponsors. The domestic rights of BCCI, which were owned by PayTM, were transferred to Mastercard. Kiltmakers MPL found a way out and transferred their ownership to KKCL. When Indian players wore MPL practise jerseys with Killer on them during the SL series, it was clear that the move had been made in a hurry.
