Cricket Viral Video: The incident involving R Ashwin's mankading of Jos Buttler during the 2019 IPL season remains a highly-discussed topic in the league's history. Although Ashwin's dismissal of the batsman was permissible under the rules, the cricketer has faced criticism on some occasions. In accordance with the regulations, a bowler can execute a Mankad to dismiss a batsman who leaves the crease before the ball is delivered. However, this method of dismissal is widely considered controversial. Despite popular belief that Ashwin was the first and only cricketer to carry out a Mankad, former India captain Kapil Dev also used this technique once during the early 1990s.
In 1992, Kapil Dev performed a Mankad on South African batsman Peter Kirsten during the Friendship Series between India and South Africa. The incident occurred during the second ODI of the series when Kirsten was at the non-striker's end. Kapil had already given Kirsten a warning regarding leaving the crease early, but the batsman did not heed the warning. When Kirsten left the crease again, Kapil executed the Mankad and dismissed him from the game. As a result, Kirsten was out for just 5 runs off 20 balls.
In terms of the match, India could only score a total of 147 runs in 49.4 overs. South Africa lost two quick wickets at the beginning of their innings, but they made a comeback and went on to win the game by six wickets, taking 46.4 overs to reach the target.
India ended up losing the seven-match ODI series against South Africa, 2-5. In the four-match Test series that followed, South Africa emerged as the winner, winning it 1-0. It is worth noting that the two teams played two Test matches before the commencement of the ODI series, with the last two Tests being played after the completion of the extended seven-match ODI series.
