Bruno’s double leads Portugal to final 16

Surprisingly, only three teams have clinched positions in the final 16 following the first two rounds of group stage matches. The remaining 13 berths from the remaining 27 clubs in contention will be determined by the results of the group matches’ final round. The only teams that have already exited the competition are hosts Qatar and Canada.

In the 54th minute, Fernandes gave Portugal the lead after a scoreless first half. The goal was originally credited to Cristiano Ronaldo. When Fernandes crossed the ball, Ronaldo jumped close to the six-yard box to connect, but the ball was already in the goal. Then, in stoppage time, Fernandes scored his second goal, this time on a penalty kick that he had won himself.

Fight for group’s final spot begins

With six points after two games, Portugal has enough to go to the next round in Qatar. While Ghana, who is in second place with three points, will need to defeat Uruguay in their last group encounter on Friday in order to advance. South Korea is still in the running for the final slot in the group, therefore Portugal will play them on Friday as well.

First pitch invader of the Qatar tournament appeared during the game at the magnificent 89,000-seat Lusail Stadium in Doha. The man carried rainbow flags and messages of support for women in Iran and Ukraine.

Both teams made three changes from their opening matches. Portugal substituted veteran Pepe for the hurt Danilo Pereira, who suffered cracked ribs in training.
