In 2021, Virat Kohli held the position of India’s all-format captain. He made an announcement before the T20 World Cup 2021, stating that he would resign as T20I captain after the event’s conclusion. However, surprisingly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) removed him from the ODI captaincy as well, before the next series against South Africa.

The BCCI announced that Rohit Sharma was the new ODI captain and included a statement explaining the reason for the change in leadership. Chetan Sharma, the head of the Indian men’s cricket team’s selection committee, revealed that the former BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly, did not support Rohit over Kohli, but had a personal dislike towards Kohli. He said, Ganguly did not favour Rohit but he never liked Virat. You can put it in this way.”

India’s performance in international cricket has been affected by injuries, and according to the current chief selector, some “superstar” players in the Indian team use injections to become fully prepared for matches. He further added that these players are well aware of doping tests. He stated, “Some Indian superstar players take injections to be 100% match ready. Those injections don’t get caught in dope test.”

Chetan Sharma speaks on the captaincy change

Speaking further on captaincy change, he said, “Virat Kohli felt he lost the captaincy because of BCCI President. There were 9 people in the selection committee video conference, Ganguly may have told him ‘think about it once’. I think Kohli didn’t hear it, there were 9 others there including myself and all other selectors, BCCI officials – Kohli might not have heard him.” He also stated, “We removed him from ODI captaincy as we did not want two separate white ball captains,”

Speaking further on the conflict between Rohit and Virat he said, “There is no battle between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma but there is ego. Both are like big film stars you can say, Amitabh Bachan and Dharmendra.”

Notable players such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been absent from the Indian T20I squad since the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2022. The chief selector, Chetan Sharma, explained that the star players are being rested to provide an opportunity for new players like Shubman Gill to showcase their skills. Additionally, Sharma revealed that players like Hardik Pandya, Umesh Yadav, and Deepak Hooda have visited his residence to discuss their future in cricket.
