ICC World Cup Qualifiers 2023: Sri Lanka booked their place in the ICC World Cup 2023 after an emphatic win against Zimbabwe. Sri Lankans never let Zimbabwe breathe in the match and registered a win by 9 wickets.
With this win, Sri Lanka became the first team to qualify for the World Cup 2023. Only two teams can qualify for the World Cup from World Cup Qualifiers. Zimbabwe also had the chance to book their place in the World Cup if they had won the match.
Earlier in the qualifiers, West Indies were knocked out by Scotland and that was the biggest upset of the tournament. Scotland also has the chance to qualify for World Cup, if they beat Zimbabwe in the next match.
ICC World Cup Qualifiers 2023: Dominant Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has been dominant since the start of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers. They had won all the group stage matches and super six matches as well. The Lions are sitting at the top of the table comfortably with no one capable of dethroning them now.
They were in complete control of the match against Zimbabwe and never looked troubled. While bowling first Maheesh Theekshana took four wickets and Dilshan Madushanka took three wickets to stop Zimbabwe on just 165 runs.
Pathum Nissanka scored a brilliant century while chasing as Sri Lanka chased down the target in just 33 overs with 9 wickets in hand. Dimuth Karunaratne scored 30 before getting out while Kusal Mendis remained not out on 25.
Zimbabwe or Scotland?
The race for the last place in World Cup qualification is really intense now. With both Zimbabwe and Scotland eyeing the last spot. Zimbabwe is sitting in second position with 6 points in 4 matches while Scotland is in third with 4 points in 3 matches.
Both teams have suffered only one loss in Super Six so far and that came against Sri Lanka. The ongoing match between Scotland and Zimbabwe will be crucial to decide who will be in World Cup as the team winning the match will most probably cement their place in the pinnacle of cricket.
