Indian Women’s losses against Great Britain in hockey

On August 6, 2021, Great Britain women’s field hockey team defeated India 4-3 in the bronze medal match at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 .

For the Britain, Sarah Robertson, Elena Sian Rayer, Hollie Pearne-Webb, and Grace Balsdon scored goals. India’s Vandana Katariya and Gurjit Kaur both scored goals.

The difference between the two sides was that India had a greater number of chances, but Great Britain took advantage of more of them.

Goalie Savita Punia had made an outstanding in the early minutes of the first quarter when the ball was struck directly at the goal and thereby ensured that India did not concede a goal instantly.

The deadlock was broken by Great Britain immediately in the second quarter when midfielder Sarah Jones got a lucky breakthrough as she took a penalty corner. GB struck et again in the same quarter Sarah Robertson perfectly found the back of the net to put pressure on India.

However, India struck back when star defender Gurjit Kaur scored a drag flick to restore her team’s hopes.

Despite winning gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, India has yet to win an Olympic medal.

The Indian women’s hockey team has never won a medal at the Summer Olympics but had finished fourth at the 1980 event. On the other hand, Great Britain were the defending champions having won the gold medal in 2016.
