The BCCI will have Binny as its new president. A trustworthy source who arrived here on Monday for a meeting of all the state representatives called by the BCCI to decide on the five office-bearers’ posts told this paper late on Monday night that Rajivji (Rajiv Shukla) would continue as the vice president. This was in advance of a formal meeting of the state representatives on Tuesday. The fact that Binny showed up for this meeting essentially verified earlier rumours that he was a candidate for president.

Roger Binny: 1983 World Cup’s leading wicket taker

From 1979 to 1987, the 67-year-old took 47 wickets in 27 Test matches and 77 in 72 ODIs. His greatest moment of glory, of course, came during the 1983 World Cup, when he recorded 18 wickets in 8 games at an average of 18.66 (best bowling 4-29) to become the tournament’s leading wicket-taker and contribute significantly to India’s surprise victory.

When the former India seamer’s name appeared on the BCCI’s Draft Electoral Rolls for the elections and the Annual General Meeting as a representative of the Karnataka State Cricket Association, rumours about Binny—who has previously served as a national selector—becoming a surprise candidate for the coveted position began to circulate.
