Saurav Ganguly: TMC-BJP brawl over Dada’s exit as BCCI president; Raises question on Jay Shah

Saurav Ganguly: Reports that Sourav Ganguly will step down as the head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have sparked a political dispute in Bengal. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) claimed that the decision to replace the former India captain with Roger Binny was motivated by a personal grudge against Ganguly.

TMC MP Shantanu Sen posted on Twitter, “Another example of political vendetta. The Son of Amit Shah can be retained as Secretary of BCCI. But Ganguly can’t be. Is it because he is from the State of West Bengal or he didn’t join BJP? We are with you dada!”

Sen reported that Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Ganguly’s home for dinner in May of this year and added that Shah had repeatedly asked Ganguly to join the BJP. He alleged that Shah wanted Ganguly to be a face against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He added that Ganguly’s presidency was stolen precisely because he declined the deal.

Continuing, he said, “This is not just a politically influenced act but cheap saffronisation of sports. The BJP has reserved all top managerial positions for the family members of their leaders.”

BJP State head refutes the allegations

Dilip Ghosh, the state head of the BJP, denied the accusations by saying, “I have no idea if Shantanu Sen or his party aided Sourav Ganguly in any manner.” The TMC is still playing politics, as they are accustomed to doing. The top BJP official and Kharagpur MP questioned as to Roger Binny’s relationship with the party in the past. Ghosh argued that the Bengal government should focus on revitalising sports in Bengal before attacking the BJP.

Ganguly will no longer seek the position of BCCI president, it was announced following a meeting of BCCI key features in Delhi earlier this week. According to reports, Roger Binny will take Ganguly’s place. Roger was also a member of the 1983 World Cup winning squad. Arun Thakur, who happens to be the brother of Union Minsiter Anurag Thakur, had the intention to run again for BCCI treasurer, which, eventually become a topic of hot discussion in the meeting.
