Sourav Ganguly: “Others would have not got the opportunity if…” Says Dada after backing out from CAB elections

Sourav Ganguly: After deciding not to run for re-election as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Sourav Ganguly’s older brother Snehasish Ganguly will be assuming the position.

After being turned down for a second term as the head of the Indian Cricket Board, Sourav had said he would put in his application for the top position at the CAB. He had even promised to do it on Saturday. However, he took a U-turn on Saturday when he said that he would decide whether to file the candidacy on Sunday, the deadline.

He made it crystal clear on Sunday afternoon that he would not be filing, which allowed former first-class cricketer Snehasish to easily ascend to the top position. Before Sourav entered the picture following the BCCI snub, Snehasish was expected to succeed departing president Avishek Dalmiya. Snehasish said that Sourav had changed his mind about declaring his candidacy on Saturday.

“Sourav changed his mind yesterday (Saturday) and decided not to file his nomination,” according to Snehasish, who will be sworn in as president following the CAB annual general meeting on October 31.

Others would have not got the opportunity says Ganguly

“I had said that I would contest only if there is an election. There wasn’t any election, so it was uncontested. Had I been there (as president), it would have meant two more people wouldn’t get any posts. So I have moved aside,” Sourav said at Eden Gardens.

“I would’ve been (elected) uncontested, but I don’t think it’s right. Had I been there, others would not have got the opportunity to work for this association. They will be working for these three years now, and we’ll see after that.

“These are all experienced people and they will be running the show now. I’ll be there for them sometimes,” he added. So what’s next for Sourav now? “Let’s see… Happy that I’m out of responsibility for a while,” the former Board president replied.

At the Eden on Sunday afternoon, Sourav met with between 60 and 70 association members and executives. Sources claim that barely anyone objected to the new panel of office-bearers that was selected.

Naresh Ojha, who previously served as the CAB vice-president, will take over as secretary with Snehasish serving as president. While Prabir Chakraborty takes over for Debasish Ganguly as treasurer, Debabrata Das remains the joint secretary.

Amalendu Biswas, who has previously managed the senior Bengal men’s team, will now take on the role of vice president.
