US Open 2023: Novak Djokovic scripted history when he won his 24th Grand Slam Title at the Flushing Meadows on Monday. A 24th Grand Slam title is something that people can only dream about, but the Serbian has done it.
Not only he became the number 1 ranked player currently but he also tied the record for most Grand Slam win in Open Era. It was his 10th US Open final appearance and he made sure he won’t let 2018 repeat itself.
It was not an easy challenge as Medvedev had defeated Djokovic in the finals of Flushing Meadows back in 2018. The Russian was also red hot after upsetting Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open 2023 Semi finals.
History Maker Djokovic At US Open 2023
The Serbian tied the record of Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam singles haul. It was his 36th major final and he has only lost one match in majors this year winning 26 out of the total 27.
He won the final in straight sets with 6-3,7-6,6-3 as the number 3 ranked player had no chance in front of the Serbian. His textbook drop shot remained unanswered throughout the match and he dominated the game completely.
Mamba Mentality
After creating history, Djokovic debuted a custom T-shirt in tribute to his later friend Kobe Bryant. The T-shirt had “Mamba Mentality” printed in the centre with Djokovic and Kobe’s picture.
“I thought of doing this t-shirt eventually, if I get the chance to win the tournament, about seven days ago. Kobe was a close friend, we chatted a lot about the winner’s mentality. When I was struggling with injury and trying to make my comeback, he was one of the people I relied on the most. He was always there for any kind of council, advice, any kind of support in the most friendly way,” The World Number 1 was emotional after the match.
The reason why Djokovic launched the T-Shirt today was because Kobe used to wear 24 number jersey and that jersey is now a legend in Basketball. Not only in basketball, but in every sport, Kobe has left a mark.
