‘Would Babita Phogat Sit With Those Who Exploited Her Family’: Smriti Irani On Wrestlers’ Protest

On Wednesday, Union Minister Smriti Irani chastised the wrestlers who were protesting against Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, asking why Babita Phogat would associate with those who take advantage of others.

Babita Phogat, a professional wrestler who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019, is the cousin of Vinesh Phogat, another champion wrestler who is currently leading the protest against Singh alongside Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik.

Irani questioned Vinesh’s cousin in an interview with a television news programme why she would hang out with people who took advantage of her family members.

“I was with Babita Phogat, 2-3 hours before this interview. Do you think a famous wrestler like Baibta Phogat would sit with people who would have exploited someone and that too people of her family,” she said.

“Do you think Babita Phogat would go against her family?”

She further added “independent probe is the only way by which these women (Vinesh and Sakshi) can be helped.”

The Delhi police disputed rumours that there is not enough evidence to warrant Singh’s arrest on Wednesday and stated that an inquiry into the subject is ongoing. The wrestlers were also encouraged to hold off until the investigation was over by Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.

The grapplers had stated on Tuesday that they would immerse their medals in the Ganga River at Haridwar, but they later altered their minds.

Congress said that Smriti Irani is “Missing.”

In an apparent reference to the BJP leader’s silence regarding the sexual harassment allegations against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Congress party targeted the Union Women and Child Development Minister on Wednesday by tweeting a picture of her with the word “Missing” written over it.

This comes after the party claimed earlier that Irani was hiding responses to one of her tweets in which followers questioned how police detained the wrestlers on Sunday.
