WPL 2023: Tournament’s future on risk? Empty stands and low crowd turnout leaves BCCI red-faced on global stage

WPL 2023: The highly anticipated Women’s Premier League has started with great hopes. However, contrary to initial predictions and reports, the stadiums are less-filled. This has left many in confusion as there was severe buzz regarding the tournament. In the opening ceremony as well, the crowd was not up to the mark. As per the reports, this has left BCCI concerned as well because low turnouts could prove to be a risk for tournament’s future.

WPL 2023 begins with empty stands

With tournament’s double-header on Sunday i.e. 5th March, there were several reports that claimed that the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Delhi Capitals (DC) is sold out. However, when the match began in Brabourne stadium, only half of the seats were spotted to be filled.

BCCI has so far kept the ticket prices to be very reasonable in the WPL games. However, it has failed to see a sold-out crowd even after making the entry free for females. Meanwhile, the tickets for males is priced at INR 100, and 400. Some fans even attended the opening ceremony of the tournament but left as soon as the game began.

Low turnout in games

The BCCI had claimed sold-out crowds, but were left embarrassed during the DC vs RCB clash when the actual attendance did not compare to the sold-out crowds seen during the India vs Australia series last year. Though there was a sizeable crowd watching, it was not enough to fill the stadium. This trend continued in the third game of the season, where UP Warriorz faced Gujarat Giants, with empty seats visible in the venue.

Though, the tournament is still in its early phases, BCCI would look to address this issue as soon as possible to keep the tournament profitable. Though, low ticket prices could not be very much profitable to the board, a sold-out crowd is necessary for the tournament’s upcoming seasons.
