Anurag Dhanda Raises Concern Over Suspension of AAP MLAs Amid Delhi Pollution Debate

However, instead of allowing a debate inside the House, several AAP legislators were suspended.

Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Anurag Dhanda has strongly criticised the suspension of AAP legislators from the Delhi Assembly, stating that elected representatives are being denied the right to discuss one of the capital’s most serious public health crises — rising air pollution.

In a statement shared on social media, Dhanda said that AAP MLAs have been repeatedly demanding a discussion on the worsening pollution levels in Delhi, which continue to affect millions of residents. However, instead of allowing a debate inside the House, several AAP legislators were suspended.

Anurag Dhanda: Call to Speaker for Fair Discussion

Anurag Dhanda urged Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta to revoke the suspensions and allow all MLAs to participate in a meaningful discussion on pollution. He stressed that the Assembly should serve as a platform for addressing people’s concerns rather than silencing voices raising urgent issues.

“Pollution is not a political issue, it is a people’s issue,” Dhanda emphasised, adding that preventing discussion on such a critical matter undermines democratic values.

Political Tensions in Delhi Assembly

The incident has further intensified tensions between the ruling party and the Speaker’s office. AAP leaders argue that the suspensions reflect an attempt to avoid accountability on environmental governance, especially at a time when air quality in Delhi has reached alarming levels.

With schools facing disruptions, hospitals reporting increased respiratory cases and citizens struggling to breathe clean air, AAP leaders maintain that discussion on pollution should be a priority for the Assembly. They insist that constructive debate can lead to stronger policy responses and inter-governmental coordination.

The demand to revoke the suspension is now being closely watched, as it highlights the broader debate on democratic functioning, environmental responsibility and the role of elected representatives in raising people-centric issues.
