Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway Flooded Six Days After Inauguration, Angry Commuters Demand Accountability for Damaged Cars

Bengaluru Mysuru Expressway

Bengaluru Mysuru Expressway: The Ramanagara district of Karnataka had torrential rains on Friday night, flooding the Bengaluru-Mysuru motorway, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had opened six days earlier. The 8,480 crore ($8,480) motorway was flooded close to Bengaluru’s neighbouring Ramanagara district. A series of bumper-to-bumper collisions caused by the standing water in the underbridge on the highway caused slow-moving cars and protracted periods of traffic congestion.

Angry passengers accused the PM of damaging their cars

When Karnataka saw record-breaking rainfall last year, this is the same underbridge that flooded. Several angry passengers accused the PM and Chief Minister BS Bommai of damaging their cars and questioned if the motorway was ready for its official opening. “I was driving a Maruti Swift that was partially immersed in the flooded underbridge. When it turned off, a lorry coming up behind me hit my car. Who is going to be held accountable for this? To have my car fixed, I’m asking Chief Minister Bommai. Did PM Modi even ask his road and transport ministry if the roadway was ready for inauguration before he officially opened it? Should we endure pain in order to advance vote-bank politics? What’s the point of charging such a hefty toll fee?” said commuter Vikas.

Numerous accidents were reported

Nagaraju, a further irritated commuter who said that his car was involved in the first of the bumper-to-bumper crashes, questioned who would be held accountable for them. If the PM had shown there, they could have solved the waterlogging in ten minutes, he claimed. “Numerous accidents were reported not long after the underbridge began to fill with water. The first collision was mine, followed by a string of seven to eight car, bumper-to-bumper collisions. There is nowhere for the water to go back. If the PM’s arrival is known, they would have this waterlogging cleared in 10 minutes. Don’t you see how the average person is suffering? Who is in charge of this?” said Nagaraju.

A catalyst for the socioeconomic growth of the area

The 118 km long Bengaluru-Mysuru motorway, which cut the travel time from three hours to roughly 75 minutes, was officially opened by PM Modi on March 12. It is anticipated that the six-lane portion of NH 275 between Bengaluru, Nidaghatta, and Mysuru will serve as a catalyst for the socioeconomic growth of the area.
