Bihar Weather Update: Orange Alert issued for THESE districts; Kosi River on Rise; State on Edge as Flood Threat Looms Large

Bihar Weather Update

Bihar Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain in Bihar today. An orange alert has been issued for the districts of Katihar, Madhepura, Purnia, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj in the state. Additionally, there is a potential for thunderstorms and lightning in certain areas. For the past four days, approximately one million individuals residing between the eastern and western embankments of the Kosi River downstream from the Birpur barrage have been enduring a distressing situation due to unrelenting floods in the region.

Kosi River on Rise

The severity of their ordeal can be measured by the fact that on the night of August 25, the Birpur barrage released 4.14 lakh cusec of water through its 56 gates. This came after a record-breaking water discharge of 4.62 lakh cusec on August 14 this year, as reported by the water resources department (WRD) in their flood bulletin. Interestingly, the discharge rate had decreased to 3.04 lakh cusec by the morning of August 26. However, over the past three days, the water discharge has remained within the range of 2.33 lakh cusec to 2.68 lakh cusec.

The rise in the water level of the Kosi River has exacerbated the challenges faced by the residents of Mahishi and Navahatta blocks. Additionally, waterlogging on the main road of 12 villages in these blocks has posed significant issues for the local population. Some areas are experiencing water levels as high as 4 to 5 feet with strong currents flowing across the road. This situation has rendered walking perilous for the people, cutting off their access to district and block headquarters entirely.

Rain deficit in Bihar

During the initial days of August, East India experienced a scarcity of rainfall. In Bihar, the decline in rainfall was notably 47 percent on August 1. However, a gradual shift occurred in the weather patterns. The monsoon has rebounded, leading to significant improvements in the state’s conditions. By August 27, the rainfall deficit had reduced from 47 to 24 percent.
