The bridge forms a crucial part of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a 272-kilometre-long project that connects the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India through an all-weather railway line. Constructed in Reasi district, the bridge posed numerous challenges due to the rugged Himalayan terrain and harsh climatic conditions. However, with advanced technology and round-the-clock work, Indian engineers have turned this ambitious vision into reality.

Part of a Larger Vision

The bridge is a pivotal element of the USBRL project, which aims to provide all-weather connectivity between Jammu, Udhampur, Katra, Banihal, and Baramulla. Trains are already operational in stretches like Banihal-Baramulla, and the completion of the Chenab Bridge paves the way for uninterrupted train movement from Katra to Kashmir.

The bridge’s inauguration will coincide with the launch of the first-ever Vande Bharat Express to Kashmir, also flagged off by the Prime Minister during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir on June 6. This will be Modi’s first visit to the region after Operation Sindhoor, India's recent counter-terror operation across the border.
