Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the iconic Chenab Railway Bridge on June 6, marking a historic milestone in India's infrastructure development. Situated in Jammu and Kashmir, the Chenab Bridge is the world’s highest railway arch bridge, standing 359 meters above the Chenab River — taller than the Eiffel Tower.
The bridge forms a crucial part of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a 272-kilometre-long project that connects the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India through an all-weather railway line. The bridge is not only an engineering marvel but also a symbol of India’s commitment to boosting connectivity in remote and strategic regions.
Key Features of the Chenab Bridge
Height: 359 meters above river bed
Length: Over 1.3 kilometers
Material Used: Over 10,000 metric tonnes of steel
Design Life: 120 years
Seismic and Blast-Resistant: Engineered to withstand high winds, earthquakes, and potential terror threats
Constructed in Reasi district, the bridge posed numerous challenges due to the rugged Himalayan terrain and harsh climatic conditions. However, with advanced technology and round-the-clock work, Indian engineers have turned this ambitious vision into reality.
Part of a Larger Vision
The bridge is a pivotal element of the USBRL project, which aims to provide all-weather connectivity between Jammu, Udhampur, Katra, Banihal, and Baramulla. Trains are already operational in stretches like Banihal-Baramulla, and the completion of the Chenab Bridge paves the way for uninterrupted train movement from Katra to Kashmir.
The bridge’s inauguration will coincide with the launch of the first-ever Vande Bharat Express to Kashmir, also flagged off by the Prime Minister during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir on June 6. This will be Modi’s first visit to the region after Operation Sindhoor, India's recent counter-terror operation across the border.
Strategic and Economic Impact
Besides its symbolic significance, the Chenab Bridge will boost tourism, ease troop movement, and promote economic development in Jammu and Kashmir. Enhanced rail connectivity is expected to reduce travel time, improve trade logistics, and open up employment opportunities across the region.
With the inauguration just days away, anticipation is building among locals and railway enthusiasts across the country. The Chenab Bridge is set to become a proud testament to India’s engineering prowess and national integration efforts.
