Corporal punishment: 9-year old fails to recite table of 2, school instructor runs drilling machine on his palm

Corporal punishment: In a shocking incident, a school instructor at Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh ran a drilling machine on the palm of a 9-year old class 5 student as punishment. The instructor resorted to such horrific act when the student failed to recite mathematical tables. He suffered cuts on his hand. Another student used presence of mind and pulled out the drill plug. This saved the child from suffering deeper injuries.

The shocking incident took place at Basic Primary Model School in Prem Nagar area of Kanpur on Thursday. 

The injured student was identified as Vivan and the accused teacher as Anuj Pandey.

Friend saves Vivan

Narrating the incident, Vivan said his instructor asked him to recite the table of 2 but he did not remember the table. “Anuj sir got angry and ran the drilling machine on my left hand. My friend Krishna, who was with me, pulled the plug but by then my hand had been cut,” he said. 

However, other sources said the shocking incident happened when Vivan was passing through the school library where some repair work was going on in the presence of Anuj Pandey.

The incident took came to light on Friday when the parents of the student staged a protest outside the school.

Reports said Pandey was not an employee of the school and was engaged by the education department to supervise the repair work in the school.

Panel to probe incident

Basic education officer (BSA) Surjit Kumar reached the spot and removed Anuj Pandey. He formed a three-member committee to probe the incident.

The BSA said “The instructor is being removed from the school, besides recommendations have been made to terminate him from services. Along with this, a three-member committee has been formed to see if the incident was an accident or was aimed at hurting the minor boy.”

He said the panel will also look into other aspects like the circumstances under which children were permitted by their teachers to go to the library where repair work was underway.
