In a significant move aimed at improving the lives of the urban poor, BJP MLA Rekha Gupta announced the commencement of multiple development projects in the slum areas of Shalimar Bagh, her legislative constituency in Delhi. The announcement was made public via a tweet, in which Gupta highlighted the beginning of ground-level work in colonies that had, until now, been ignored for years.
Years of Promises Now Turning Into Action
Rekha Gupta emphasized that while residents of these localities had heard only political promises in the past, actual development work has now begun under the leadership and vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Places where only promises were made are now witnessing real action. Thanks to Modi ji's vision, the long-neglected areas are finally seeing the dawn of good days,” her tweet read.
These developmental efforts include basic infrastructure upgrades such as improved sanitation, better drainage systems, road repairs, access to clean drinking water, and electrification in several clusters. Gupta also stated that efforts will be made to ensure these neighborhoods are integrated into mainstream urban services.
Double-Engine Government at Work
Lauding the coordination between the central and Delhi BJP leadership, Gupta described the ongoing work as part of a broader “double-engine government” initiative, where both central and local governments are aligned in delivering grassroots-level development.
“The combined efforts of the Centre and Delhi BJP aim to ensure that development reaches every poor household and that every slum is connected to essential services,” she said.
Residents of the area expressed cautious optimism as machinery and teams began work on-site. For many, this is the first time in decades that government-led projects have reached their neighborhoods.
With these initiatives, the BJP leadership in Delhi aims to bring tangible improvements to the lives of underserved communities, bridging the gap between urban prosperity and slum conditions.
