Delhi Mumbai Expressway Nears Completion, Travel Time to Drop to Around 12 Hours

Officials describe it as a unique engineering achievement, as it is among the first instances of an eight-lane highway tunnel being constructed.

The Delhi Mumbai Expressway, one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, is approaching completion with the construction of a crucial 4.9-kilometre tunnel near Kota. Once fully operational, the 1,386-kilometre-long expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Mumbai from nearly 24 hours to around 12 hours, enhancing connectivity and boosting economic activity along the corridor.

Launched in 2019, the project has been developed at an estimated cost of nearly ₹1 lakh crore. While several stretches of the expressway have already been opened to traffic, the completion of the Kota tunnel marks a key milestone in the final phase of the project. Delays caused by land acquisition challenges had affected the timeline, but authorities now indicate that the expressway is moving steadily toward full operational status.

The eight-lane access-controlled expressway will pass through Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra, connecting major cities and industrial hubs along its route. The corridor is expected to improve logistics efficiency, reduce transportation costs, and strengthen trade and tourism between northern and western India.

A notable feature of the project is the 4.9-kilometre tunnel passing through the ecologically sensitive Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve near Kota. Officials describe it as a unique engineering achievement, as it is among the first instances of an eight-lane highway tunnel being constructed through such a challenging terrain while incorporating environmental safeguards.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has positioned the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway as a world-class transport corridor designed to improve commuter convenience and support economic growth. Once fully operational, the expressway is expected to facilitate faster movement of passengers and goods while enhancing connectivity between some of India’s most important metropolitan centres.
