Rahul Gandhi: Delhi’s festive shopping season centre of a conflict As traders voice fears of Ramlila Maidan rally by INDIA bloc on November 1, 2026 Diwali is around the corner, and business owners are worried that traffic restrictions, security police and huge crowds will have an impact on the movement of customers and the availability of products in several commercial areas.

Why are Delhi traders asking Rahul Gandhi to delay the rally?

The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), representing traders in the city, has repeatedly urged Rahul Gandhi to reschedule the November 1 rally. Traders say that holding a large political rally just days before Diwali will be a problem for the sector that thrives on the festive season.Speaking to PTI, CTI chairman Brijesh Goyal said as many as 10 lakh people were expected to participate in the planned processions and several thousand vehicles were also expected to reach the state capital, which might impact movement of traffic and commercial areas. The traders’ body has put the business activity at nearly ₹10,000 crore.

Diwali Shopping Season Raises Concerns Among Market Associations

This is the most profit making occasion for the wholesale and retail markets of Delhi. Customers from across the nation come to Delhi to buy clothes, gifts, sweets, electronic gadgets, jewellery and other merchandise on this occasion. The traders are especially worried as the November 1 date comes ahead of Dhanteras on November 6 and the festival of lights in the country  Diwali – which falls on November 8.Traffic diversions, detours and security arrangements at Ramlila Maidan worry them. They are also concerned that those leading up to the square may create difficulties for them in getting to their markets. Any delay in loading goods will harm shopkeepers who are gearing up for the festival season. The CTI has warned that close to 20 large wholesale and retail markets might be impacted if the likely throngs of people and traffic curbs pose a threat to standard commercial operations.

Traders Nominate Different Dates and Sites for the Rally

Rather than calling off the political rally, merchants have recommended alternative dates, where it is possible to help the INDIA bloc stage their programme without sabotaging the holiday shopping season. The CTI has asked the rally date to be changed to November 10 and 11 or later. The organization has proposed an alternative venue in Burari Ground which could minimize the chances of traffic jams in Delhi’s heart. The traders’ body then made its last appeal to Sonia Gandhi after its previous appeals to Rahul Gandhi had gone unheeded.

Rahul Gandhi’s Stand on the November 1 Rally

The postponement demand has also shifted the spotlight on Rahul Gandhi over the INDIA bloc meeting. As per a report which was published on October 27, Gandhi had told the traders that the meeting would be held as announced, even though they had made an appeal. The suggested demonstration relates to Opposition’s worries on the matter of the electoral procedure and the Election Commission, including the calls for Gyanesh Kumar. As at 30 October, the most recent update we can find states: “Traders did seek fresh appeal but no official date of change of rally or venue confirmed”.

Will the INDIA Bloc Reconsider the Rally Timing?

The program scheduled for November 1 is looming, and the traders are demanding that the program be put off till the end of the festival shopping season. Two issues lie at the heart of this. Why has the INDIA bloc chosen to hold the protest? Because of political considerations and the traders want the flow of customers, supply chains, and business to continue during Diwali. Some of these issues could be resolved if the venue or date were to change, but there has been no such confirmation in the most recent reporting. Decide days ahead will be crucial in deciding the Congress leadership will listen to the traders’ demand or not and if the proposed rally takes place as per its scheduled time.
