Firecracker Ban in Spotlight, Supreme Court Demands Explanation from Delhi Govt on Curtailment Policies

The Supreme Court questions the Delhi government over Firecracker Ban policies, raising concerns about enforcement, court orders, and rising air pollution.

The courts have revisited the Firecracker Ban in Delhi after the Supreme Court dismissed the Delhi government on its limits and instructions. During the session, the court expressed concern about following the Supreme Court’s orders and sought an answer from the government on steps to control the use of firecrackers. It has once more ignited the argument over celebrations, air pollution, and environmental protection.

SC Questions Delhi Govt Over Firecracker Ban

The question of the Delhi administration’s response to the restrictions on firecrackers was raised by the Supreme Court. During the hearing, the bench asked about the disparity between the directions by the judiciary and the ground-level enforcement. The judges are said to have made stern comments on implementation of the orders, asking whether the ban on firecracker use was being enforced and directing the Delhi government to share information on measures taken to regulate firecracker use.

Firecracker Ban and Air Pollution Still Top List of Concerns

The court heard representations on the effect of firecrackers on Delhi-NCR’s air quality during the festive season. The court asked if proper observations were conducted by the authorities in zones where firecrackers were burst and if the authorities had gathered enough data on violations. The bench also asked for comparative data between the areas where AQI increased and between places where AQI was still varied and assured that they had to show the effect of their action rather than just an action plan.

Supreme Court Seeks Balance Between Festivals and Public Health

The Supreme Court stated that it was not in favor of a ban on firecrackers. It said that religious and celebratory sentiments must be weighed against public health and environmental concerns. The court further noted the need to be vigilant about compliance even on the days when firecrackers are said to be permitted. It noted that leading personalities like cricketer Virat Kohli should be roped in to create awareness about pollution and avoiding firecracker celebrations. The bench directed that it should be more on the implementation of restrictions rather than filling the rule book with indiscriminate directions with no outcome.

Delhi Gov’t. Revealed Pollution Control Steps

The authorities had revealed, during the hearing, many measures planned for the next winter pollution season. They include 608 anti-smog guns, electric vehicles charging points, greening measures, and pollution monitoring. Nevertheless, the Supreme Court doubted the usefulness of this preparedness and cited a report that just nine of the 29 units of the CAQM were operational. The bench called for more accountability and directed the government to disseminate available information to the people about the measures taken for pollution control and its outcome.

What are the next steps in the firecracker ban case?

The issue of the firecracker ban is also pending before the Court as they deliberate ways of combating air pollution while upholding the celebration of festivities. Another bench is likely to hear the issue concerning the sale and bursting of firecrackers on Diwali. Firecracker sellers have also demanded permission for the sale and bursting of firecrackers on specific days and times. At the moment, however, Supreme Court observations have shifted the burden on authorities to ensure data and foolproof pollution-control measures.
