A significant development has emerged for the people of Madhya Pradesh as nearly 23,000 panchayat secretaries across the state have announced a seven-day leave from March 26 to April 1. Those with pending work at the panchayat office are advised to complete it before the secretaries begin their collective leave.
Protest Over Salary Delays
The decision comes as a protest against non-payment of salaries. According to Dinesh Sharma, President of the Panchayat Secretary Organization, secretaries from 313 blocks and 52 district headquarters will submit memorandums to district collectors regarding their seven-point demands. If the demands are not met by March 25, the secretaries will proceed with their planned leave. Furthermore, if no resolution is reached even after the seven-day period, the protest could be extended into a full-fledged strike.
Key Demands of Panchayat Secretaries
The secretaries have put forth seven primary demands:
Issuance of an order ensuring salary payment on the 1st of every month.
Clearance of pending salaries, which have not been paid for the last 3-4 months.
Implementation of time-scale pay benefits as per the Chief Minister’s announcement.
Provision of government employee benefits and a separate budget allocation to ensure timely salary disbursement.
Granting of fifth and sixth pay scale benefits from the date of appointment.
Full 100% compassionate appointments for underprivileged and deserving candidates.
Completion of the pending merger process.
With panchayat secretaries taking collective leave, public services in local offices may be affected. The state government is yet to respond to their demands, and the coming days will determine whether a resolution is reached or if the protest escalates into an indefinite strike.
