In a major step towards enhancing riverfront infrastructure and religious tourism in Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav on Friday laid the foundation stone for the Shipra Riverfront Development Project in Ujjain, estimated to cost ₹864 crore.
The ambitious project includes the construction of a 29-kilometre-long new Shipra Ghat along the sacred Shipra River and the development of 21 new barrages to regulate water flow and improve river management.
A Vision to Boost Pilgrimage and Tourism
The Shipra river holds immense religious significance, especially for devotees visiting Ujjain — one of the four sites of the Kumbh Mela. With the new ghats and barrages, the project aims to enhance pilgrim facilities, prevent flooding, and beautify the riverbanks to attract more tourists and pilgrims alike.
CM Yadav Emphasizes Cultural and Environmental Importance
During the ceremony, CM Yadav said the project will not only preserve the religious and cultural heritage of Ujjain but also ensure better environmental management of the Shipra River. “This initiative is part of our broader vision to transform Ujjain into a world-class spiritual and cultural center,” he added.
Massive Infrastructure Push Ahead of Upcoming Events
The development is also being seen as preparation for upcoming large-scale religious events, including the next Simhastha Kumbh, which brings millions of visitors to the holy city. The newly designed ghats and barrages will help manage crowds and ensure smoother rituals during such events.
