Reports revealed that the fire erupted during the Holi celebrations at Mahakal Temple, precisely during the Bhasma Aarti ritual dedicated to Baba Mahakal. It is believed that the fire broke out when colors inadvertently fell onto the aarti plate, igniting a sudden blaze within the sanctum sanctorum.
Eyewitnesses speculated that the fire may have originated when ‘gulal’ was being scattered as part of a religious ceremony.

The injured priests were promptly taken to the district hospital for treatment, where they are currently undergoing medical care for their burn injuries. The Collector of Ujjain, Neeraj Kumar Singh, confirmed that thirteen priests suffered burns and are receiving treatment at the district hospital.
