MP News: The illegal firecracker factory that recently turned into a deadly disaster had been operating as a clandestine site, expanding from a small space to a 1.5-acre campus over the past few years. Despite being a dangerous workplace, the factory enticed impoverished workers with the promise of decent wages.
Illegal Firecracker Factory Turned Death Trap: A History of Tragedies
The factory functioned akin to a cottage industry, specializing in the production of ‘sutli’ bombs. The manufacturing process involved different tasks distributed among workers, including making explosives, filling them into boxes, wrapping them with ‘sutli’ (a type of thread), inserting fuses, packing, and more.
Workers were paid on a per-piece basis, with different rates for various tasks. While some families took the work to their homes, remnants of the firecrackers were found inside their houses, now damaged due to the fire. Despite this, no one is willing to admit involvement in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Notably, previous incidents of tragedies occurred in nearby locations. In 2015, two individuals lost their lives a few hundred meters from the recent factory site at the house of Dinesh Sharma, which was rented to the factory owner. Similarly, in 2022, three people died in an explosion at the house of Lokesh Beldar in the same locality.
